Film4FrightFest 2009

FILM4 FRIGHTFEST is the UK's premiere fantasy and horror film festival. Now in its tenth year, each August thousands of genre fans gather together in the heart of London's West End at the prodigious Empire Cinema for five packed days of premieres, previews, personal appearances, signings and surprises.

The Film4 FrightFest 2009 celebrates ten years of chills, thrills and kills by moving to the Empire Cinema, Leicester Sq, to serve up its distinctive and controversial mix of must-see and yet-to-be discovered genre movies from around the world. From Thurs 27 August to Monday 31 August the UK’s top event for horror fans will unveil thirty five new films in two screens. Empire 1 will house the main event while ‘FrightFest Discovery’ will play in Empire 4.

This year twelve countries are represented across four continents and there are a record eleven world premieres and fifteen UK premieres. British horror scores heavily with the world premiere of Christopher Smith’s shocker TRIANGLE opening the festival and the world premiere of the much anticipated THE DESCENT: PART TWO as the closing night finale. There is also the world premiere of Philip Ridley’s unique horror fantasy HEARTLESS and the UK premiere of CLIVE BARKER’S DREAD.

Internationally, the festival strikes gold with the UK premiere of MILLENIUM: THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, based on the best selling novel by Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson. Then there’s Dario Argento’s latest thriller GIALLO, HIERRO, from the producers of PAN’S LABYRINTH, the eagerly awaited slasher tribute THE HILLS RUN RED, Christian Alvart’s powerfully disturbing CASE 39, Ti West’s occult masterpiece THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL and from the producers of WOLF CREEK, an Aussie gripper – COFFIN ROCK. Monsters loom large in this year’s line-up with zombies particularly in good form. There’s DEAD SNOW (Nazi zombies), COLIN (low-budget zombies) THE HORDE (angry zombies) and ZOMBIE WOMEN OF SATAN (burlesque zombies). Monster mayhem and murder take centre-stage with a sinister collection of night-creatures in the riveting horror anthology TRICK R TREAT and an army of big bad bugs in INFESTATION. Then there is the aptly named VAMPIRE GIRL VS. FRANKENSTEIN GIRL and perhaps the most controversial film at this year’s event – THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE.

Fans of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON will get the chance to meet John Landis, who is attending the festival, alongside the cast, to present a fully restored version of the classic, as well as a never-seen-before documentary feature. Other directors currently confirmed to attend include:, Adam Gierasch (NIGHT OF THE DEMONS), Ti West (THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL) Dave Parker (THE HILLS RUN RED), Lee Demabre (SMASH CUT), Christopher Smith (TRIANGLE), Philip Ridley (HEARTLESS) and Federico Zampaglione (SHADOW). Other special guests include directors Adam Green, & Joe Lynch and actors Jim Sturgess and David Hess.

FrightFest Discovery makes its debut this year in Empire 4, where nine new films will be screening including the world premieres of EVIL THINGS, directed by Dominic Perez and FRAGMENT, directed by Andrew Miles – both films using the device of camera footage to chilling effect. Also showing are Cannes headline grabber COLIN, reputedly made for £45, the critically-acclaimed PONTYPOOL and the grisly remake of Larry Cohen’s cult classic IT’S ALIVE. Also this year there is a horror writing competition (details to be announced), a ‘100 Best Deaths’ event, hosted by DEAD SET actor Andy Nyman, plus the usual special guest appearances, Q & A’s, sneak previews, a short film strand, signings, competition prizes and give-aways – all of which goes to make up the unique experience that fans across the world have come and made their own.

5 Gum Sense5 Launch party, London

Earlier this Month we were invited to the 5 Gum "Creating Sense5" launch party held in London. 5 Gum is new flavourful gum from Wrigleys. The general consensus is that 5 Gum really is a taste explosion in a chewing gum kind of way.

The launch was conducted by Vice Magazine who ran a a competition in the lead up to the event. They sent out an open call to creatives to create something that like the gum intrigues and exhilarates the senses. And when I say something, the entries could have been anything one felt would represent the gum. Award winning band Hot Chip would then select the winning talent and curate the gig. "Thursday, June 4th certainly turned out to be an unforgettable night at The Arches, London Bridge. Hot Chip's two live DJ sets - one featuring Kano - were supported by unique performances from The Penny Serenade, Raf Daddy, Planning To Rock and Noze.

Five winners of the CreatingSense5 competition, whose entries, like the 5 gum, represented and stimulated the senses. Their interactive installations including the "touch wall" and "edible forest" proved to be a huge success - with people finding more than one different use for them!"

Stand out moments for me were discovering Portuguese Sangeres beer (a almost honey tinged malty beer), hearing Planning To Rock for the first time, Hot Chip's awesome live set as well as hearing the sublime combination of Hot Chip & Kano together. Devil in the White City - Fan Made Trailer

Devil in the White City is a book by Erik Larson that tells the story of 2 men "Their fates were linked by the magical Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, nicknamed the “White City” for its majestic beauty. Architect Daniel Burnham built it; serial killer Dr. H. H. Holmes used it to lure victims to his World’s Fair Hotel, designed for murder. Both men left behind them a powerful legacy, one of brilliance and energy, the other of sorrow and darkness." This is an awesome tale weaving 2 stories together. The mast incredible thing about the story is that it is all true.

Secret Cinema Febuary, London - A vote for Anvil is a vote for the spirit of Rock n Roll

Last weekend Secret Cinema pulled off their most awesome screening yet!:

- Dress for an 80s rock evening (Rock Gods, Shady Promoters, Metal Heads and Old School Rockers)
- Meet at the Sheperds Bush Empire
- An introduction by the legend that is Mr. Ralph Brown or Danny as he is known to his friends
- A screening of a short film about a Lebanese drummer
- An actual performance by up and coming rock band Cauldron
- A UK Premiere screening of ANVIL!

The following is a quote from www.metalhammer.co.uk which sums up the film pretty neatly:

"It’s not as if we metal fans aren’t used to being patronised and misunderstood by outsiders, but the strength of the Anvil movie lies in the fact that it’s a genuinely touching story about human beings, relationships and the pursuit of childhood dreams; all things that the vast majority of people can relate to without recourse to sneering superiority. In fact, the most startling thing about this screening of the film is that as it progresses, there’s a very noticeable change in atmosphere, as bemused giggling slowly evolves into bona fide sympathy and affection for Anvil and their rollercoaster ride."

The film moved me (a non hard metal fan) to purchase the latest ANVIL CD. I say "moved" as I have not bought a hard copy music in about 4 years. I knew of the ANVIL film and although impressed on hearing that ANVIL the band had been making live appearance to support the films launch had already decided that I would see it as a download or when it was on TV. I'm really glad I got to see the film big screen at Secret Cinema. I should mention that I had it the wrong way around - the film was created to promote the story of ANVIl. I only found out at that screening that the film was actually made by a dedicated ANVIL fan who had followed them since their early performances.

In many ways not only is it true to the spirit of rock but independent film making as well. So the film is over. It's time to pack up and leave. WRONG! Secret Cinema was just starting! After the credits the lights dim, a lone guitar riffs metal and a spotlight lights up a second tier balcony revealing "Lips" wailing on his axe.

- The screening was followed by a performance from ANVIL themselves and if that was not enough they pulled in Scott Ian (legendary Anthrax guitarist) to play a couple of songs. ANVIL pretty much got the audience on their feet and rocking out. It was a genuine rock gig by a genuine rock band.

Was this the last know activity of Rorschach from the Watchmen?

In June 2007 I was alerted to the launch of a new site: www.rorschachsjournal.com. When visiting the site all there was to see was the following large graphic.



Curious! What did this mean? Was this supposed to be the Rorschach? My curiosity was piqued. When I clicked the rr image an email addressed to: rorschach@rorschachsjournal.com popped up? Anyway I sent off the following:

Naturally thinking this was aimed at a US audience as well as a little puzzled by the complete lack of iconic visuals I thought I'd wait till the site evolved to include some "official" Watchmen info or graphics. A couple of months later I visited again and it was gone?

This is a far cry from the current viral marketing that has been unleashed onto the internet, that has actively included a UK audience (http://watchmen-screening.pbwiki.com/). Awesome!. Have you seen the Social Media tool kit available here: http://www.i-watch-the-watchmen.com/ww/ ?

The summarized recreation of popular pop-culture films using limited budgets and a camcorder. The process is called sweding. Upon completion the film has been Sweded.

Origins: In the Michel Gondry film BE KIND REWIND, the character Jerry accidentally erases the videotapes at Mos Def's rental store, and the pair remake all the movies themselves. These versions become popular with customers, who are told they take longer to arrive and cost more because they come from Sweden. Hence, the films are referred to as 'Sweded'.

Thundercats Hooooooooooooo!!!!!!

This fan made trailer for an imagined Thundercats is impressive, in a Thundercats kind of way.



It's called Thundercats: Sword of Omens and took WormyTV the creator "about a year and a half on and off". Thundercats the film is still in pre development and expected to be in cinemas 2010.
