Hilarious short film from Virgin Media Shorts - Three Little Words
Ed Lilly's short film entry to the Virgin Media Shorts competition encapsulates the above quandary superbly whilst making you cringe or smile. Making a short film is difficult enough but engaging your audience and taking them along for the ride whether it be horror, drama or comedy is the Holy Grail of short film-making you have but 2-3 minutes to bring your audience into a made up world and ask them to engage in a scenario and have emotional buy in as well to ensure a pay off.
Of the 3 (horror, Drama or Comedy) comedy has to be the most difficult horror and drama has crutches like blood, shock, black & white film or dark ambient music. whilst comedy relies on actor's expression and timing to pull it off. I'm in awe of Ed's stylings with little more than a handful of actors and 2 locations he has created a scenario that engages. Three Little Words and She Farted And Created The World… have to be my favourite films of the shortlisted 12 to win the Virgin Media Shorts competition.
There seems to be lots of support from real players in the industry to champion undiscovered or unknown talent. For the Virgin medioa Shorts competion Virgin are ponying up a £30,000 prize to be used to make a film as well as the opportunity for your work to be judged by some star talent like Kevin Spacey, Gemma Arterton, Noel Clarke and Daniel Barber as well as many others. I hope the support doesn't dry up moving forward.
Has there ever been a better time to be a filmmaker in the UK?

She Farted And Created The World
It warms my heart when I see inventive film-making from young talent like this. Some of the other clips short listed are brilliant but the amount of time, effort and vision encapsulated in the 2:10 minute clip surely warrants it a mention of note. Anyone who has ever thought about making a film is aware of the logistics and pitfalls of such an endeavour but Director Scott Coello makes it looks easy and creates a visually compelling experience with depth at the same time. In case you are interested in what Scott is up to he can be followed on Twitter here.

5 Gum Sense5 Launch party, London
Earlier this Month we were invited to the 5 Gum "Creating Sense5" launch party held in London. 5 Gum is new flavourful gum from Wrigleys. The general consensus is that 5 Gum really is a taste explosion in a chewing gum kind of way.
The launch was conducted by Vice Magazine who ran a a competition in the lead up to the event. They sent out an open call to creatives to create something that like the gum intrigues and exhilarates the senses. And when I say something, the entries could have been anything one felt would represent the gum. Award winning band Hot Chip would then select the winning talent and curate the gig. From The Vice website:
"Thursday, June 4th certainly turned out to be an unforgettable night at The Arches, London Bridge. Hot Chip's two live DJ sets - one featuring Kano - were supported by unique performances from The Penny Serenade, Raf Daddy, Planning To Rock and Noze.
Five winners of the CreatingSense5 competition, whose entries, like the 5 gum, represented and stimulated the senses. Their interactive installations including the "touch wall" and "edible forest" proved to be a huge success - with people finding more than one different use for them!"
Stand out moments for me were discovering Portuguese Sangeres beer (a almost honey tinged malty beer), hearing Planning To Rock for the first time, Hot Chip's awesome live set as well as hearing the sublime combination of Hot Chip & Kano together. Pics & videos to follow in the meantime you can see more pics from the event here!

Breaking news: Nick Walker's "The Empire’s State" Street Art lottery
Nick Walker at The London Art FairThe Black Rat Press will be handing out a limited number of tickets to people in the queue for immediate purchase within the fair.
6pm Tuesday 13th Jan 2009 sees the public opening of the“London Art Fair” where Nick Walker will be releasing his screen print "The Empire’s State" through The Black Rat Press (the gallery who represents him). The phone hasn’t stopped ringing with international interest from people trying to reserve a print even from as far as Colombia and Korea. But the 175 prints which are to be on sale at £475.00 each are only being sold to people who are queuing at the London Art Fair. The Black Rat Press have had to draft in extra security in anticipation of the crowds which are expected to start queuing well in advance again, of the doors opening.
In 2008 the demand for Nick Walker's work was so high that in April when the doors opened for his solo show “V for Vandalism” people had been queuing for over 36hrs to buy the print alone, and the show sold out within minutes of the doors opening.
Nick received positive press in 2008. To name a few he a appeared on the cover on the Independent magazine with the title “move over Banksy” in Feb 2008, and has most recently featured in The Observers round up of the year’s biggest events 2008”.
He has had sell out shows in LA and London and an eagerly awaited show coming later in 2009 is rumored to be taking place in New York.

Redesign Diesel's 55DSL logo
And they’re at it again this year, partnering with Cut&Paste to present the 55DSL Logo Remix. The Logo Remix challenges graphic designers, illustrators, and typographers, as well as all-around creative types, to take the iconic 55DSL Shield logo and spin it into a remix that reflects 55DSL’s culture and spirit, its origins and its future.
The Grand Prize–winning design, to be featured in a T-shirt design for the 2010 Spring/Summer collection, will successfully reinterpret the 55DSL Shield logo and represent 55DSL’s identity as an experimental, avant-garde streetwear brand (which first launched as a spin-off of Diesel), while considering the art, urban culture, extreme sports, and music influences that have always been at the heart of the label’s fun-loving, nonconformist attitude. The Grand Prize winner of the 55DSL Logo Remix will receive 1,055€ in addition to seeing his/her logo design produced by 55DSL.* During the contest period, all designs submitted for the Logo Remix will be showcased in Cut&Paste’s online gallery for public viewing, commenting, and voting. The People’s Choice Prize, a specially created goodie bag of 55DSL limited editions, will be awarded to the design that receives the most votes online. Both winners will be featured in the online gallery, which will be permanently available as part of Cut&Paste’s online collection of work.

*The winning logo design will be used at the discretion of 55DSL and will not replace the 55DSL Shield logo. "
