Gala screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho

CARE International has joined forces with the Empire, Leicester Square, to present a special gala screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s seminal classic, Psycho, with its iconic score by Bernard Herrmann. Released in 1960, Psycho changed everything – pushing the boundaries of screen horror and delivering some of the best known scenes in all movies. Herrmann’s score, written only for strings, is simply one of the greatest film scores ever created. This screening is a rare opportunity to experience Psycho on one of the biggest and best screens in the country – and raise money for CARE International.

Many of the composers appearing in the Concert for CARE will be present at the Empire and will take part in a unique mega-Q&A after the screening, discussing Herrmann’s score and looking back on film music in the last 50 years. There will also be a chance to meet the composers and our other very special guests to get signed CDs and DVDs.

A rare opportunity to see Hitchcock's seminal classic on one of the biggest and best screens in the UK. Released in 1960, Psycho changed cinema forever, pushing the boundaries of screen horror and providing some of the best-known scenes in all movies. Bernard Herrmann's visceral score is simply one of the greatest film scores ever created.

A larcenous Phoenix real–estate secretary Marion Crane (Leigh) picks the wrong place to spend a night: The bates Motel (12 cabins, 12 vacancies, 12 showers), run by a peculiar young man (Perkins) and his crotchety old ‘mother‘. Based on Robert Bloch‘s novel, the film‘s numerous set pieces remain unsurpassed (the superbly edited shower sequence, storyboarded by Saul Bass is one of the most influential in film history), with the film having accrued the reputation as the master of all suspense movies.

This screening forms part of David Arnold's Concert for CARE, a major event at the Royal Albert Hall on October 18th featuring some of the biggest names in film music. Many of the composers, including David Arnold, John Ottman, Harry Gregson-Williams, John Powell, George Fenton, Rachel Portman and Dario Marianelli will also attend the Psycho screening and will take part in an exclusive Q&A on film scoring following the Psycho screening.

As part of the 'Daydreaming with... James Lavelle' exhibition which takes place at Haunch of Venison over the August Bank Holiday weekend, the festival concludes with a special evening with James Lavelle at the Prince Charles cinema in Leicester Square - UNKLE On Screen, in association with shots.

The event will feature the screening of a selection of UNKLE music videos , including John Hillcoat –directed video for new single ‘The Answer’, and commercials scored by the band, as well as the feature film ‘Odyssey in Rome’, directed by Alex Grazioli and scored by UNKLE. Following the screenings, James Lavelle will be in conversation with Alex Grazioli. The conversation will be chaired by Danny Edwards, Editor of Shots magazine.

Battleship Potemkin with Zombie Zombie Live

French duo Zombie Zombie have gained worldwide attention since their debut album A Land For Renegades in 2008, both as a formidable live band and as music producers of the highest calibre. Through their use of vintage analogue synthesizers the band create intensely atmospheric music that has oft drawn comparison with the soundtracks of John Carpenter, the scores by Goblin for the films of Dario Argento and, notably, Gil Melle's soundtrack for The Andromeda Strain.

Such references would not seem to lead obviously to working on Battleship Potemkin, yet the band's passionate re-imagining of Eisenstein's silent classic has been heralded as a triumph since its debut performance in Paris at the end of 2009. The BFI are delighted to present the UK Premiere of this re-score.

No One Knows about Persian Cats Review and Special live session

The experience of discovering a film can be wonderful. Some of my favourite films are films I have seen without prior knowledge of our raised expectations. I was aware that it had done well at Cannes the same year that Un Prophete won (it won the Special Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section) and that it was about the music scene in Iraq. With that in mind I made my way to a screening of “No One Knows about Persian Cats”.

What’s it all about?
The story follows the recently released from jail and talented Negar (Negar Shaghaghi) and Ashcan (Ashkan Koshanejad) as they plan to leave Teheran and play a concert in London. Their quest puts them in touch with Nader (Hamed Behdad) - a fast talking and hilarious fixer that guides them through the underground music scene of Teheran. While the palpable possibility of failure and incarceration hanging over their heads. As the story unfolds there is a wavering balance between awe at the musical talent on screen and uncomfortable dread that things could all fall apart.

What’s it like
In the first couple of minutes of No One Knows about Persian Cats I was immediately struck by the similarity in its cinematic style to the raw 60s French new-wave cinema. Not only its Cinéma vérité handheld camera style, fresh editing, real dialogue, real locations and regular use of characters in transit. For me the similarities didn’t end there. Persian Cats evoked the same feeling in me that Goddard or Truffaut’s films brought to the fore when (much in the same way Persian Cats reveals a hidden Tehran and its people) they exposed me to a world and culture so different from my own.

However where Godard's maxim is "all you need for a movie is a girl and a gun", Persian Cats director Bahman Ghobadi’s approach is more all "all you need for a movie is a girl and music" as he explores the underground music scene in Iran showcasing what must be some of Tehran’s best unknown bands. The comparison between Goddard’s gun device and music is intentional as we find out that for over 30 years the Iranian government has banned certain types of music deemed as impure, forcing many fans of Iranian alternative music and western bands to go underground. At this point we shift into guerrilla D. A. Pennebaker style music documentary and we are introduced to different musicians each representing a different music style such as indie rock, progressive rock, Jazz and Electric Blues, Farsi death metal, Iran street rap, and traditional Persian music. Background
No One Knows about Persian Cats was Produced written by American born Iranian journalist Roxana Saberi. She was sentenced to an 8 year jail spell for “spying for America”. Eventually her sentence was reduced and she was released. Her experience permeates through Persian Cats.


The Director Bahman Ghobadi (A Time for Drunken Horses, Turtles Can Fly) is an award-winning Director whose films are rarely seen in his own country. At the beginning of the film we are told that it’s based on real people, real locations and real events and that really hit home when I found out that Persian Cats was made without permission or “official permits”. My understanding is that after he has shown Persian Cats to the world Ghobadi will not be returning home. His love of music makes each musician’s scene a joy to experience.

The lead actors do have a band and it's called Take It Easy Hospital, they live in London having fled their homeland.

The talented musicians are undoubtedly the stars of Persian Cats. If you are a fan of world cinema, Middle Eastern or just good music, then No One Knows about Persian Cats is a must-see. However Persian Cats’s greatest strength, the chance to gain some insight into a little known or seen culture, may also possibly be its greatest weakness. Its lack of pandering to western audiences may make it less accessible than more crowd-pleasing fare.

Ennio Morricone at The Royal Albert Hall

The legendary Ennio Morricone has composed and arranged scores for more than 500 film and television productions including A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West. The Italian composer has won two Grammy Awards and two Golden Globes.

He has composed and arranged scores for more than 500 film and television productions. Morricone is considered as one of the most influential film composers since the late 1950s. He is well-known for his long-term collaborations with international acclaimed directors such as Sergio Leone, Brian De Palma, Barry Levinson, and Giuseppe Tornatore.

He wrote the characteristic film scores of Leone's Spaghetti Westerns A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) and Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). In the 80s, Morricone composed the scores for John Carpenter's horror movie The Thing (1982), Leone's Once Upon a Time in America (1984), Roland Joffé's The Mission (1986), Brian De Palma's The Untouchables (1987) and Giuseppe Tornatore's Cinema Paradiso (1988).

His more recent compositions include the scores for Oliver Stone's U Turn (1997), Tornatore's The Legend of 1900 (1998) and Malèna (2000), Mission to Mars (2000) by Brian De Palma, Fateless (2005), and Baaria - La porta del vento (2009). Ennio Morricone has won two Grammy Awards, two Golden Globes and five Anthony Asquith Awards for Film Music by BAFTA in 1979–1992. He has been nominated for five Academy Awards for Best Music, Original Score in 1979–2001. Morricone received the Honorary Academy Award in 2007 "for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music". He was the second composer to receive this award after its introduction in 1928.

No One Knows About Persian Cats Special Screenings

Here at theestablishingshot.com we love fresh cinema and music, so when we heard that No One Knows About Persian Cats the Cannes 2009 Special Jury Prize Winner had a UK release date we were quite excited. This is after all, the same Jury that gave A Prophet top marks.

I'm also kind of hooked on the theme song "Human Jungle" used in the trailer by ‘Take It Easy Hospital’ Some kind of catchy.

For over 30 years the Iranian government has banned certain types of music deemed as impure, compelling many fans of Iranian alternative music and western bands to go underground.

No One Knows About Persian Cats combines musical performances with an edgy underground narrative and follows Iranian musicians Negar (Negar Shaghagi) and Ashkan (Ashkan Koshanejad) as they look for band members to play at a London concert as well as their tribulations to acquire visas that will allow them to leave Iran to do so.


No One Knows About Persian Cats will be on general release at selected cinemas from 26 March, 2010.

David Arnold Movie Music Master Class in March 2010

The Space and the Duke of York's present a movie music masterclass with Grammy-winning composer David Arnold and Oscar-winning composer Anne Dudley.

David Arnold and Anne Dudley will discuss their favourite and some classic film music. This will be illustrated with a selection of memorable film scenes, highlighting the power and magic of the combination of film and music, and how the two art forms merge to such great effect.

Our special guests will also demonstrate how they have conceived some of their compositions for film and TV.

DAVID ARNOLD
Few British composers have attained such international acclaim as David Arnold. A successful debut with The Young Americans, then sci-fi adventure Stargate led to a role scoring Hollywood blockbuster Independence Day and Danny Boyle’s A Life Less Ordinary.
As a lifelong fan of James Bond Arnold had produced an album of 007 theme covers with a range of artists including Chrissie Hynde and Iggy Pop. Praise from composer John Barry for these interpretations led to a commission to write the score for Tomorrow Never Dies. He has scored all of the Bond films since, including Quantum of Solace.

Arnold’s career has crossed many genres, from his collaborations with action director Roland Emmerich to his work on Zoolander and award-winning television comedy Little Britain.
He recently produced the new and highly acclaimed Shirley Bassey album, The Performance.

ANNE DUDLEY
Composer, arranger, producer and performer, Anne Dudley is a multi-talented and critically-acclaimed musician.
She has composed and produced soundtracks for dozens of award-winning films and TV shows, and was a founding member of the Art of Noise. She has contributed string arrangements to many classic albums including ABC's The Lexicon of Love and Robbie Williams latest, Reality Killed the Video Star.

Over the course of a long and varied career, she has won an Oscar, a Grammy, a Brit and most proudly of all, the Billboard award for best new Black Act for the Art of Noise! Anne was recently nominated for the 2009 Ivor Novello award for her score to Trial and Retribution.
Her credits as an arranger include collaborating with Pet Shop Boys, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Stephen Fry, Tom Jones, Will Young, Annie Lennox, Malcolm McClaren, Bill Bailey and Sam Taylor Wood.

Freestyle Preview at the Movie Lounge

The Movie Lounge, aka the Hip-Hop Film School, is a film club supported by Film London’s Outer Boroughs Pilot Fund – an initiative that creates opportunities to see films beyond mainstream cinema exhibition. The driving force behind the project is Anointed Productions, a grassroots social enterprise based at London’s 3 Mills Studios and an organisation looking to engage the young local community in East London.

To kick start the season, the Movie Lounge will be screening Freestyle in Stratford Library. Set in the world of freestyle basketball, the story follows the blossoming romance between Ondene (newcomer Lucy Konadu) and Leon (stage regular Arinze Kene). These teens may be from different sides of the tracks, but a common interest in freestyling, learning and love brings them together.

With an impressive supporting cast, including Alfie Allen (The Kid, Atonement), Danny John-Jules (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Red Dwarf) and Colin Salmon (Blood: The Last Vampire, Clubbed), this is a heart-warming tale of how to overcome adversity that should not be missed!

Saturday afternoon is the perfect time to kick back, watch a film and be impressed by the wealth of rising Black British talent in the UK. FLC the The alternative Hip Hop / Rap / Alternative Rock / Funk / Lounge / Blues / Jazz band have been away due to some legal issues involving management and their record labels. They have been keeping it relatively low key and operating out of London. Issues have now been resolved (or contracts expired) and Huey Morgan, Brian 'Fast' Leiser and Mark Francis Reid's sixth studio album Plastic Fantastic comes out on March 1, 2010. The first single from the album Classic Fantastic is out on February 22. Having listened to preview tracks of Classic Fantastic I can say that it says what it is on the tin - Classic Fantastic.

iRock4Haiti event London tonight

"iRock4Haiti" is a celebrity charity fund-raiser in association with The British Red Cross on Tuesday 16th Feb at Altitude London. Hollywood actress Lindsay Lohan & Hip Hop Star Wyclef Jean are hosting the star studded party along with special VIP Guests to Celebrate The Brits & British Music at London's hottest new venue Altitude London.

London's elite will come together on Tuesday 16th February for "iRock4Haiti" a charity fund-raiser event in association with The British Red Cross & will screen the Brits Live in The MillBank Cinema & the after party will be held in the newly opened River Room, in Westminster SW1.

This is a celebrity fund raiser event to benefit the Haiti earthquake victims. All proceeds will go to the Red Cross. Limited tickets will be made available to the general public. Iron Man 2 AC/DC Soundtrack and Shoot to Thrill video

AC/DC are doing the soundtrack for Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2. This is excellent news, even though a little Sir Mix-a-Lot would have been awesome.

Even though Black Sabbath own the unforgettable bass thumping Iron Man. However the opening song for Iron man was AC/DC's "Back in Black" played whilst the U.S. Air Force convoy escorting Stark in Afghanistan.


Unfortunately there will be only one new song on the album - the rest of the soundtrack will be made of their greatest hits collection.

The true story of punk icon Ian Dury, who though stricken with polio at a young age, defied expectations by becoming one of the founders of the punk-rock scene in Britain in the 1970s. Dury (brilliantly played by Serkis, King Kong), also fought a long battle with the after effects of fame and Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll pulls no punches in capturing the man with all his complexities and contradictions. Whitecross (co-director of Road to Guantanamo) and writer Paul Viragh have delivered the most impressive look at a particular period and figure in British music history since Anton Corbijn’s Control.
