The aim: to get independent film-makers to be confident, business-minded, informed and ready to meet their goals. Events to be held regularly, at quarterly intervals, to ensure that film-makers become increasingly familiar and at ease with their peers and counterparts in the UK film industry.

Maggie Ellis - Head of Production & Talent Development, Film London
Maggie is responsible for the production and talent development unit of Film London, vertically integrating all of the agency's commissioning of film and training through production. She has responsibility for managing the challenging and innovative micro-budget feature film fund, as well as FLAMIN (Film London Artists' Moving Image Network).

David Marlow - Producer & Consultant (SilverLight Media)
David has over thirty years experience in film & television and has developed, produced and secured finance for a wide range of productions. At panel he will focus on the UK Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) from the producer's point of view and will outline a viable model for funding mid-budget UK feature films under current tax and economic conditions.

Agnieszka Moody - Media Desk UK
Agnieszka is director of the MEDIA Desk UK, responsible for promoting the European funding programme, MEDIA 2007, in the UK as well as giving information and advice about it. She has helped over three hundred British companies secure EU funding for media projects. Her prior experience is in independent film production in the UK and abroad.

Phil Rymer - Media Lawyer & Executive Producer
Phil has over 17 years experience in both independent and studio production. Before establishing Rymer Media Law, he was General Manager and Director of Legal and Business Affairs for Mel Gibson's Icon Entertainment. Prior to this he successfully funded a slate of UK productions for Ruby Films, including The Other Boleyn Girl and Sylvia.

Karl Dye - Film Finance, Coutts Bank
Commercial Banker, Media Team:- film production finance against pre-sale cover (contract discounting) and other collateral; providing working capital against the value of intellectual property rights; understanding and working with available tax schemes; production account management.

Martin Carr - Producer (Formosa Films)
Martin has many years experience as a feature film & TV producer, having worked with some of the UK's best writing and directing talents, such as Geoff Thompson and Danny Boyle. Formosa Films' first feature 'CLUBBED' was funded with a combination of EIS, UK Film Tax Credit and regional finance. Followed this year by the film 'twenty8k', written by Paul Abbott.

Chris Jones author of The Guerilla Film Maker's Pocketbook shares his experiences of making micro-budget features and shorts.

The Guerilla Film Makers Handbook series has sold over 100,000 copies around the world and taught thousands of emerging film makers the key skills needed to make their own great movies and launch a career. Dirty Oil screening & QA with Producer Mark Cranwell and Chris Shearlock

The Frontline Club are hosting a screening of Dirty Oil followed by a Q&A with Producer Mark Cranwell and Chris Shearlock, Environment Manager of The Co-operative Group

It is a little known fact that America imports the majority of its oil from Canada and not the Middle East. For years, Americans have been fueling what has been touted as the largest and most polluting industrial project on the planet today. Extracting oil from tar sands emits three times more greenhouse gas emissions than conventional oil and uses four times as much water and heat per barrel of oil. The demand and toll this process is taking on the land, air, water and wildlife around the Athabasca River and the downstream communities from Ft. McMurray is not only toxic but also irreversible. In early 2008 Babelgum, an online and mobile video service, which has a focus on environmental issues, commissioned its first original production from which Downstream and Dirty Oil are the result. Dirty Oil looks at an issue that is not just an Alberta or Canadian story but a global story. The oil sands have garnered an increasing amount of attention from all sides of the issue.

Narrated by Canadian actress Neve Campbell, this beautifully photographed feature documentary from Academy Award Nominated director Leslie Iwerks goes deep behind-the-scenes into the strip-mined world of Northern Alberta, Canada.

Here, vast and toxic oil sands supply the U.S. with the majority of its oil. Told through the eyes of scientists, "big oil" officials, politicians, doctors, environmentalists, and aboriginal citizens directly affected by "the largest industrial project on the planet today", the filmmakers journey to both sides of the border to uncover the emotional and irreversible impact this "black gold rush" is taking on our planet.

Dirty Oil is produced by Alberta born and Emmy Award winning producer Philip Alberstat, and co-produced by Mark Cranwell and Randy Bradshaw.

London Film & Comic Con 2010

Katee Sackhoff, who played Starbuck in the 'Re-Imagined' version of Battlestar Gallactica will be appearing at this years London Film & Comic Con.

LFCC takes place every summer at Earls Court 2 in London. Celebrating the best of film, television, comics and sport, London Film and Comic Con is a day out unlike any other, giving you the chance to meet your idols, ask them questions and have your photograph taken with them as well as grabbing the latest film/tv/comic merchandise on the market.

Chris Rock QA & Screening of Good Hair

Good Hair is a comedy-documentary starring funnyman Chris Rock (EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS) that brings African-American hairstyles to the fore.

When Chris’s daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” the dazed comic committed himself to finding out who had put that question into his little girl's head.

He began searching high and low through black culture to explore the multi-billion-dollar styling industry surrounding African-American hairstyles.

Discussing black celebrities’ personal experiences with their hair and the significant role that hair plays within the black community, GOOD HAIR is both an entertaining and eye-opening documentary that extracts cultural heritage from the most obvious if unlikely of roots.

Blade Runner: Designing the Future Panel Discussion (US)

Typically we focus on UK events but this one's a doozy and if any of our US readers get to go we're quite envious.

Bonhams & Butterfields’ prestigious Sunset Boulevard galleries in Los Angeles will play host to a panel discussion on April 15 centering around the cult classic film, Blade Runner.

Around 150 celebrities and industry power players are expected to attend the panel discussion, entitled “Blade Runner: Designing the Future.” The panel will dish on everything Blade Runner, from its environmental and social themes to the brilliant visual design that left audiences in 1982 reeling, and audiences today still just as appreciative of the classic science fiction film.

The Academy-award winning producer, Michael Deeley (The Italian Job, The Man Who Fell to Earth) will participate in the panel, along with legendary conceptual and industrial designer, Syd Mead (Star Trek, Aliens, 2010). Frances Anderton will moderate, and the Oscar-winning director of Blade Runner, Ridley Scott will attend, schedule permitting.

The event is to coincide with the opening of the auction preview for the 20th Century Decorative Arts sale, scheduled for April 20. Blade Runner fans will not want to miss out on this opportunity to pick up one-of-a-kind memorabilia from the iconic movie.

Featured auction highlights on preview include a signed promotional poster from the Blade Runner’s “Final Cut” release from the personal collection of Michael Deeley, a copy of a reissue of Philip K. Dick’s 1968 science fiction classic book on which Blade Runner is based, and a signed copy of Oblagon: Concepts of Syd Mead, 1985, which contains 17 pages of Mead’s art, created for Blade Runner from the designer’s personal library.

Zulu + introduction by Stephen Woolley

Renowned and prolific British producer Stephen Woolley (Made in Dagenham, Perrier's Bounty, How to Lose Friends & Alienate People, Stoned, The Good Thief, The End of the Affair , B. Monkey, The Crying Game, Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles, Dust Devil, Hardware, Scandal, Mona Lisa, Absolute Beginners, The Company of Wolves, etc.) joins the BFI to introduce Zulu the film that inspired him.

An epic account of the true story of under-strength British forces defending an isolated African mission at Rorke's Drift against hordes of Zulu warriors. Stanley Baker (who also co-produced with director Cy Endfield) impresses as the officer in charge, whilst a then scarcely known Michael Caine adopts an upper-class accent. The spectacular second half of the film is almost totally taken up with the battle, as the Zulus look to overpower the mission and reclaim their land. The stirring music score is by John Barry, the narration by Richard Burton.

In Woolley's words, Zulu is "a terrific adventure film" and this is a rare chance to catch it on the big screen

British producer Stephen Woolley will join the BFI for their latest instalment of their new strand, Screen Epiphanies, to introduce this classic tale. Starring Michael Caine and Stanley Baker, Zulu, a "terrific adventure film" in Woolley's words, is a spellbinding account of the Battle of Rorke's Drift between the British Army and the Zulus in January 1879.

How to finance a film

Own-it intellectual property services and the London Film Academy in partnership with the London Short Film Festival are hosting a seminar on film financing.

Financing is essential for any filmmaker who wants to take a film from an initial idea to the cinema. This session examines where to look for money in a changing market and the importance of co-producers for successful fundraising. It will also provide tips and advice on how not to get ripped off by the financiers.

Topics covered will include:

1. Where has the money gone – or why the past is of little help to producers;
2. Where should producers be looking for money – the importance of co-production partners;
3. Where can you go to get pre-production money;
4. What is the least painful and time-consuming method of closing finance;
5. How not to get ripped off by the financiers – not all the producer's fees have to be deferred; and
6. What to do when the finance starts going wrong.

Speakers will include Alan Moss a solicitor in the Film and Television Group of Harbottle & Lewis LLP. Alan provides advice on all aspects of the financing, development, production and distribution of films. Recent productions Alan has worked on include the Ealing Studios production St. Trinian's II, Independent's Mr Nice starring Rhys Ifans and Chloe Sevigny, Rogue's Gallery starring Zach Galifianakis and Maggie Q and Tormented, a Forward Films and Slingshot Studios co-production and Anna Higgs, a producer with a background in the world of interactive 'edutainment'. Anna has been involved in the production of a wide range of games, including the BAFTA award winning Lifting the Weight as well as managing digital media projects for a diverse range of clients including Sony Playstation, BskyB, Telewest and the BBC.

Duncan Jones's next film Mute & the fate of Sam Bell

By know you know that Director Duncan Jones's next film will not be an adaptation of "Escape from the Deep" as anticipated.

It sounds like "Escape from the Deep" the true story of a WW2 submarine crew that go to hell and back will be tackled after another forage into the Sci Fi with "Mute". More information about the Alex Kershaw book "Escape from the Deep" can be

The Mute concept art released via Jone's Liberty Films website looks pretty damn spiffy and tantalising enough to keep Sci Fi fans wanting more. The artwork is very reminiscent of Syd Mead's conceptual art for Blade Runner. Interesting to note that the signage in the street scene says Fremde which is German for strange, but could also mean foreign or Alien. Jones has said that Mute is not about Aliens as such. I'm guessing that this scene is some high class clientele leaving a bar/club that caters for strange tastes. This is possibly the club that the lead's girlfriend works at before disappearing. Then again it could just be a street scene.

Mute is basically the other side of the coin from Moon. Moon is about isolation, loneliness, living on your own and having to find a way to deal with that.

Mute is based in a future Berlin, so it's a big city film, a thriller in a city that so full and so unfriendly in a way. It's going to be a very different kind of film - but a good companion piece.

Mute is a much busier, nosier kind of film. It’s a thriller based in a future Berlin…. If Moon is inspired by films like Outland and Silent Running, then Mute, is inspired by Blade Runner.

The Times BFI 53rd London Film Festival: Lee Daniels - Script Factory and NFTS Masterclasses

The remarkably gifted producer-turned-director discusses his work, including his powerful new feature Precious.



Few people have the qualities needed to be a successful producer and even fewer have those needed to be a successful director. Lee Daniels' natural skills as a producer allowed him to make Monster's Ball (for which Halle Berry won an Oscar) as his first film. He then went on to gain further critical acclaim as a producer with The Woodsman (LFF 2004). Daniels is an extremely creative producer with a strong vision. He is so secure and determined in the way he envisages his films, and so hands-on as a producer that it was natural (and inevitable) that he would try his hand at directing. Daniels believes that he learned a great deal from his debut directorial experience on Shadowboxer, and that this made him an even better producer on his next project, Tennessee. This also started his fruitful collaboration with Mariah Carey, who stars in that film as well as playing a supporting role in his new offering Precious which he has directed and produced. In this deeply moving and powerful film, Daniels expertly balances the absolute horror of the title character's experience with humour and fantasy, and proves that all of the heart and soul he puts into his films is definitely paying off.
