CAPTURE LIFE IN A DAY

Sir Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald are asking YOU to help with n Historic Global Film Experiment. All you have to do is Shoot Your Life in a Day on July 24.

YouTube joins world famous filmmakers Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald in asking people around to world to help them create the first user-generated feature-length documentary film shot on a single day - July 24, 2010. Life in a Day is a historic global film experiment that enlists the global community to capture a moment of their lives on Saturday, July 24 and to upload that footage to www.youtube.com/lifeinaday.

Academy Award-winning director Kevin Macdonald (State of Play, Last King of Scotland, Touching the Void) will direct, bringing together the most compelling footage into a feature-length documentary film. The project will be executive produced by Ridley Scott (Robin Hood, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down) and produced by his company Scott Free Productions. Individuals whose footage makes it into the finished film will be credited as co-directors and 20 of these contributors will be flown to the 2011 Sundance Film Festival for the film’s world premiere.

Life in a Day is one of several efforts by YouTube to push the boundaries of music, art, and now film. YouTube Symphony Orchestra and the recently announced YouTube Play partnership with the Guggenheim are examples of the convergence of online video with traditional arts and Life in a Day takes this effort into the cinematic realm. LG Electronics is supporting Life in a Day as a key part of its long-standing Life’s Good campaign and to support the creation of quality online content that can be shared and enjoyed by all.

The director, Kevin Macdonald says of the project, “Life in a Day is a time capsule that will tell future generations what it was like to be alive on the 24th of July, 2010. It is a unique experiment in social filmmaking, and what better way to gather a limitless array of footage than to engage the world’s online community.”

“Over the past five years, YouTube has changed the way media is created and consumed," said Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, YouTube’s parent company. "We're thrilled to give our community the opportunity to work with Kevin Macdonald and Ridley Scott and are grateful to our long-term partner, the Sundance Institute, for their support of this global initiative. I can think of no better place to premiere Life in a Day than at next year’s festival.”

“A vital part of our mission is to support individual storytelling around the globe and to provide a platform for expression and experimentation,” says John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival. “This is a great way to engage the YouTube community and to also provide Festival audiences with something new and unexpected.”

“LG believes in enriching people’s lives through technology and saw complementary objectives in the Life in a Day project,” says Dermot J. M. Boden, Chief Marketing Officer at LG Electronics. “For LG, this project is a fantastic opportunity to engage with YouTube users on a personal and emotional level that’s both rewarding and enjoyable. This initiative is perfectly consistent with our brand promise of “Life’s Good”!”

Scott Free will work with Rick Smolan, creator of “A Day in the Life” and CEO of Against All Odds Productions, a California-based organization that specializes in the execution of large-scale global projects that combine story-telling with state-of-the-art technology, to distribute cameras to individuals in remote regions of the world in an effort to ensure that the film is as inclusive and representative as possible. Phillips Parallel Lines surprise competition announcement

Phillips Parallel Lines surprise competition announcementI've just got back from The Parallel Lines launch event and I'm a mixture of tired but still buzzing from the event. We got to see all 5 of the Parallel Lines shorts (El Secreto de Mateo, The Hunt, Darkroom, Jun & the Hidden Skies and The Gift) the way they should be seen on a big screen with superb sound.

All I can say is AWESOME! I know I say that a lot, but seeing the 5 different yet very connected and well made films was quite an experience. At the time I couldn't quiet put my finger on why I might be enjoying each of the films as much as I was, but it all made sense a bit later when Director of Darkroom Johnny Hardstaff said something during a QA session.

He said something to the effect that one of the primary factors that drew him to the project was the creative control the Directors had when making their respective films. Bam! Their it was I had just seen 5 films that although driven by commercial motives they were examples of what can be created when imagination is allowed free reign.

I have much to tell about the Phillips event at BAFTA, chatting with Director Johnny Hardstaff (bookmark his name name because you're going to be seeing some great stuff on the screen from him in the future), seeing all 5 of the films in one go as well as witnessing first hand some awe inspiring tech in the shape of an wiiiiiiiiiiiidescreen TV that has to be seen first hand to be believed - but more about that later.

Phillips dropped a real surprise towards the end of the presentation when they announced an amazing opportunity for filmmakers with their Tell It Your Way competition. I missed the beginning it really was a suprise! But he started by saying ... the chance to have your worked judged by Sir...

The programme card he is referring to:

From the press release:

Become the next Ridley Scott :
Philips announces global filmmaking competition
In association with ridley scott associates

Today, Philips launches an exciting global competition giving aspiring filmmakers the chance to have an original work judged by one of the world’s greatest film directors – Sir Ridley Scott, director of Hollywood blockbusters including Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982) and Gladiator (2000).

The competition, called ‘Tell It Your Way’, will also give one lucky winner the chance to gain a week’s work experience at Ridley Scott Associates (RSA) offices in Los Angeles, New York, London or Hong Kong.

The contest involves creating an original sixth short film to accompany Philips’ ground-breaking Parallel Lines series of short films, directed by RSA talents, Greg Fay, Johnny Hardstaff, Carl Erik Rinsch, Jake Scott and Hi-Sim. The five short films, released on www.philips.com/cinema, are part of a cinematic project whereby each director created a film in a different genre, with a different storyline, but all following the same six line dialogue.

The Parallel Lines films bring to life the cinematic capabilities of Philips TVs – unique Ambilight technology, award-winning picture quality, and superior sound - and are a cinematic interpretation of the campaign idea: “There are millions of ways to tell a story. There’s only one way to watch one.”

”I’m delighted to be involved with a project which supports aspiring directors and I’m looking forward to seeing how the entrants interpret the single dialogue brief,” comments Sir Ridley Scott.

“At Philips, we are committed to delivering a cinematic viewing experience at home. Through our partnership with RSA, we’re excited to be able to offer the public the chance to create their own film and have it be promoted globally as part of such a ground-breaking project as Parallel Lines.” comments Gary Raucher, Head of Integrated Marketing Communications, Philips.

Competition entries are open to anyone globally and should be submitted via the official Philips Cinema YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/philipscinema). Entries close at midnight 8th August 2010. Three rounds of judging will be held including public voting via YouTube. Finalists will be judged on criteria including creative storytelling, use of dialogue, and technical achievement. The top ten finalists will be selected by RSA directors and British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) Chairman, David Parfitt. The overall winner will be selected from the top five finalists by Sir Ridley Scott himself.

Runners up prize packages include an invitation to a RSA film premiere in London or New York including travel, accommodation; and a number of Philips Cinema 21:9 Televisions.

SCI-FI-LONDON 9 (2010) is coming

SCI-FI-LONDON (or The London International Festival Of Science Fiction And Fantastic Film), the UK’s leading genre event and an internationally recognised launch pad for genre movies is coming! The festival, now in its 9th year and will take place Wed 28th April – Mon 3rd May 2010 at The Apollo Piccadilly Circus Cinema, London’s most luxurious cinema.

Each year SCI-FI-LONDON have at least a dozen UK premieres and in the last few years have had the first public screening (ahead of the USA!) of 28 Weeks Later and the world premiere of Bruce (Iron Maiden) Dickinson’s Chemical Wedding. Amongst the myriad of special events last year's SFL saw premieres of Eyeborgs, The Hunt for Gollum, a screening of The City of Lost Children introduced by Director Marc Caro and an early preview of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

For me the highlights from last year's festival where the Gala opening party, the talk with 2000AD legend Kevin O'Neill, a hi def screening of the little known sci fi masterpiece Hardware (c'mon Richard Stanley make another film already) and a talk by Director Neil Oseman about the inventive The Darkside of the Earth a family fantasy adventure time travel steam-punk feature film that he (at the time) was looking for competion funding for. I have to say the teaser clip he showed from The Darkside of the Earth was phenomenal and I can't wait to see it on the big screen.

THE DARK SIDE OF THE EARTH, set in the 19th century, the world stops spinning suddenly. But there is hope, a mysterious character on the dark side may have the key to getting the planet moving again.

We also had writers such as China Miéville, Charles Stross and Alastair Reynolds, along with screenwriter Stuart Hazeldine (Knowing, Exam) - even William Hurt popped his head in.

Regular events include; World Premieres, exclusive preview screenings, the prestigious Arthur C Clarke Award, the SFL: Film Lab, All-nighters, Shorts, Special talks, Documentaries, The SCI-FI-LONDON Awards and the SCI-FI-LONDON Pub Quiz.

This year's festival will run from Wed 28th April – Mon 3rd May, 2010. Although no official announcments have been made about this year's festival. It looks like Louis Savy (Festival Director & Founder) is pulling a great show together for SFL9. So far we have gleaned that:

- This year's theme is Life in 2050
- There will be an Aliens vs Humans all-nighter.
- The first pick for the Sci Fi Comedy All-nighter at SCI-FI-LONDON is the 1977 The Alien Factor, riffed by the fantastic Cinematic Titanic.

- 2 Mexican features can be expected in the programme. I'm hoping one of them is the awesome Sleep Dealer.

- Also screening will be Radio Free Albemuth adapted from a Philip K. Dick story.

Radio Free Albemuth (Jon Scarfe, Alanis Morissette)
Nick Brady is a college dropout and record store clerk living in Berkeley in the year 1984. But it's not the same reality we know. The Watergate tapes were burned and President Ferris Fremont, a Nixon-like clone is still in office. And he'll probably be elected to another term and another ... pursuing a terrorist organization known as Aramchek.

- And most exciting! The SCI-FI-LONDON 48 Hour Film Challenge will run from 10-12 April and one of the judges will be Vincenzo Natali director of amongst others; Cube, Earth: Final Conflict, Cypher, Paris, je t'aime and Splice. I wonder if a screening of Splice is on the cards?

-SCI-FI-LONDON are currently looking for volunteers, head over to http://www.sci-fi-london.com/festival/2010/volunteer/ for more information if you are intrested in being involved.

Update 1#: Via the magic of the Internet I have found some further info about some of the films that may be part of the SFL9 lineup:

8th Wonderland

8th WONDERLAND secretly gathers people from around the world which have one point in common: the wish never again to be subjected to news broadcasts, without being able to react. And as it is true that an individual barely has any chance of being listened to, a country on the other hand, has many more possibilities of intervention at an international level.

Every week, each inhabitant of 8th WONDERLAND gives one euro. Every week, they vote for a different motion by referendum. Should one be adopted, the inhabitants of this virtual country take it upon themselves to apply it to the real world. They have only one line of conduct: to improve things.

Depositarios

A Sci-fiction police thriller set in Mexico city 2015, a future similar to Children of men, where each person has got a "depositario", a sort of twin who has not got rights to live except for receipting the pain of their brothers.

1
A clever adaptation of Stanislaw Lem's One Human Minute. A bookshop renowned for its rare works is mysteriously and completely filled with copies of a book entitled 1, which doesn't appear to have a publisher or author. The strange almanac describes what happens to the whole of humanity in the space of a minute. A police investigation begins and the bookshop staff are placed in solitary confinement by the Bureau for Paranormal Research (RDI Reality Defense Institute). As the investigation progresses, the situation becomes more complex and the book increasingly well known, raising numerous controversies (political, scientific, religious and artistic). Plagued by doubts, the protagonist has to face facts: reality only exists in the imagination of individuals.

Adás (Transmission)
A mesmerizing dystopian drama set in a world in which all the screens have stopped functioning. Television stations don't broadcast, computer monitors are empty, the entire telecommunication industry is gone. The story starts months after the last screen has stopped working and society has started to develop alternative ways of living.

Earthling

Premiering at SxSW 2010. After a mysterious atmospheric event, a small group of people wake up to realize that their entire lives have been a lie. They are in fact aliens disguised as humans. Now they have to make a choice. Live amongst men, or try to find a way back home.

2033

In 2033, a military government dominates, taking away religious faith and freedom of expression. Paul, a young banker nestles into drugs and alcohol, but his life changes when he meets Lozada. Paul leaves his privileged life to help the disadvantaged and destroy the system that controls the populace through PACTI an addictive drink.

Eraser Children

Originally scheduled to be screened at lasy year's festival it has made it this year. In a dystopia of useless products, pre-paid dreams, and a system of violations so invasive that if you laugh too loudly you will be fined, Misner Corporation has invented a new source of energy, generating a monopoly on all facets of human existence. The world is now a totalitarian global state ruled by one man. Anyone unwilling to work for Misners regime lives underground in a dark world of insane system dropouts. Finnegan Wright, a lower level worker at Misner Corp. is taken on an enthralling journey when one of these dropouts kidnaps Finnegan and tries to convince him to change the fate of the world by killing Misner.

Test pilota Pirxa

The movie is about "finite nonlinears," robots that closely resemble human beings but are even more perfect than humans. They are intended to eventually replace human beings in space flights. Somewhat apprehensive about their usefullness, the United Nations sets up a space flight to determine their reactions to the human beings who also make up the crew. Pirx is selected as a commander of the flight, although the identity of the robots is not revealed to him.

Golem

Set in a terrorizing world of the future, where technology commands the movements of individuals, supervised by the doctors, carrying out a program to improve the human race. Thus, instead of doctors creating a monster, the monsters are already there as the species of the future - but one of them is suspected by the doctors of being a human being. That is Golem in reverse

The War of the Worlds: Next Century

The film starts with the arrival of a more advanced civilization from Mars which purports to have a friendly attitude towards Earthlings. The place visited by the Martians resembles a police state in which a huge role is played by television, which is used as a propaganda tool.

Love Story 2050

It's story about Karan (Harman Baweja) a young spirited sporty boy who lives life off the rules and Sana (Priyanka Chopra), a young petite, shy girl who lives lives by the rules. Their interaction thus developes into a magical love story. Karan's uncle Dr. Yatinder Khanna (Boman Irani), a whacky scientist has been working on the Time Machine for years, which one day finally, works! Sana expresses her wish to travel time to Mumbai in the year 2050. What they see in the future is a spectacular city with flying cars, 200 storey building, robots and sky rails that have changed the very face of Mumbai and the world! Through a series of twist and turns, the time traveler Karan finds himself separating from his love.

Barbarella

Nothing

Director Vincenzo Natali's tale tells the story of two good friends who live together, Andrew (Andrew Miller), an agoraphobic travel agent who works from his home, and Dave (David Hewlett), a loser who works in an office where he is treated with contempt. Just when it seems things can't get any worse for the two, the entire world outside of their house disappears and is replaced with an endless white void.

Three Little Words. All males have pondered Three Little Words at some time or other. If we say them is it a life-long commitment? What if I can't live up the commitment? Careful consideration has to be given regarding Three Little Words. One can't go around spewing Three Little Words all the time it has to be forever! And let's not forget the timing of Three Little Words too early or too and the mark will be missed. Forget comedic timing, the timing of Three Little Words can result in long term happiness or the worst weekend ever!

Ed Lilly's short film entry to the Virgin Media Shorts competition encapsulates the above quandary superbly whilst making you cringe or smile. Making a short film is difficult enough but engaging your audience and taking them along for the ride whether it be horror, drama or comedy is the Holy Grail of short film-making you have but 2-3 minutes to bring your audience into a made up world and ask them to engage in a scenario and have emotional buy in as well to ensure a pay off.

Of the 3 (horror, Drama or Comedy) comedy has to be the most difficult horror and drama has crutches like blood, shock, black & white film or dark ambient music. whilst comedy relies on actor's expression and timing to pull it off. I'm in awe of Ed's stylings with little more than a handful of actors and 2 locations he has created a scenario that engages. Three Little Words and She Farted And Created The World… have to be my favourite films of the shortlisted 12 to win the Virgin Media Shorts competition.

There seems to be lots of support from real players in the industry to champion undiscovered or unknown talent. For the Virgin medioa Shorts competion Virgin are ponying up a £30,000 prize to be used to make a film as well as the opportunity for your work to be judged by some star talent like Kevin Spacey, Gemma Arterton, Noel Clarke and Daniel Barber as well as many others. I hope the support doesn't dry up moving forward.

Has there ever been a better time to be a filmmaker in the UK?

Virgin Media Shorts - She Farted And Created The World

Every year Virgin Media and it's partners run a Short film competition called the Virgin Media Shorts. While browsing the Virgin Media Shorts shortlist of 12 possible winners. I came across this exceptional animated film called "She Farted And Created The World". Odd name! Marvellous film.

It warms my heart when I see inventive film-making from young talent like this. Some of the other clips short listed are brilliant but the amount of time, effort and vision encapsulated in the 2:10 minute clip surely warrants it a mention of note. Anyone who has ever thought about making a film is aware of the logistics and pitfalls of such an endeavour but Director Scott Coello makes it looks easy and creates a visually compelling experience with depth at the same time. In case you are interested in what Scott is up to he can be followed on Twitter here.
