Monsters Andrew Kaulder's Flickr stream

MONSTERS, Gareth Edwards Gareth Edwards' Monsters will be released on the UK big screen on December 3. I was lucky enough to catch an early preview of it at this year's FrightFest as well as hear Gareth talk about the making of Monsters at both Empire's Moviecon and the aforementioned screening.

I'm a fan of the super talented Gareth Edwards and loved Monsters. Comparisons have been drawn to District 9 because of it's super low budget and minimal production, but I felt the tale has a lot more in common with Cloverfield.

Even though Gareth has said that Monsters is "part sci-fi, part romance, part road movie" you will get a lot more out of it if you go into the cinema not expecting District 9, Cloverfield or any other special FX laden extravaganza. Although Gareth is a FX wizard the magic of Monsters is that it is a quiet, understated character film set in the near future.

I particularly liked the match up of visuals with the haunting soundtrack as well as romantic play between the two lead characters. Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able are married in real life so the chemistry between them is spot on.

As soon as I get some time I'll throw up a full review as well as some clips of Gareth Edwards talking about making Monsters in the meantime - I have serendipitously stumbled across Andrew Kaulder's Flickr stream. Andrew Kaulder is the male lead character from Monsters played by Scoot McNairy.

Hi Mom!

Not sure if this is the best sign

If you have already seen Monsters these are presumably some of the photos Kaulder is seeing taking throughout the film. This is a nice understated touch of marketing and it compliments the general feel of Monsters. His full photostream can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kaulder

First Look: Inception viral site

A website has been discovered that has an Instruction manual for the Portable Automated Somnacin IntraVenous (PASIV) device.

This will only mean something if you know that Inception is about "a world where technology exists to enter the human mind through dream invasion, a single idea within one's mind can be the most dangerous weapon or the most valuable asset".

Basically most of the action will take place in people's dreams and from the LA Times - "Leonardo DiCaprio as a specialist in the new branch of corporate espionage -- he's a dream thief who plucks secrets from the minds of tycoons after pumping them full of drugs and hooking them up to a mysterious contraption. The problem, though, is the land of nod can be volatile -- as can DiCaprio's character, Dom Cobb, who is a wounded dreamer after the loss of his beloved wife." Sounds intriguing. With that in mind the following manual discovered on http://www.pasivdevice.org/ makes more sense:

The manual ends with a flash demo of the machine in operation, the final screen:

When activated it links through to: http://www.mind-crime.com the existing Inception viral site. The second stage of which http://www.mind-crime.com/stage2/ has just been released. Good luck and if you find anything let us know.

Adidas Originals Star Wars Collection

Behold! The Adidas Originals inspired by the Star Wars film series have launched their Star Wars Collection for 2010.

The Adidas Originals Star Wars collection was launched with a campaign that included an online Facebook/Death Star link in (www.adidas.com/originals/deathstar), a series of local launch parties, and a 60 second commercial featuring Darth Vader and Adidas ambassadors such as David Beckham, Snoop Dogg, and Daft Punk amongst others.

The collection for the first season is split into three packs; The Characters Pack, the Vehicles Pack and the Direct Pack. The products in each pack take inspiration from the respective aspect of the Star Wars lexicon from legendary characters and crafts to classic scenes and fuse them with iconic adidas Originals silhouettes.

Characters Pack
This pack takes the most iconic moments and characters from the Star Wars saga and brings them to life across five sneakers, two short sleeve T-shirts and the Superstar Track Top.

Vehicles Pack
For this pack, we have taken inspiration from the well known vehicles and crafts from the Star Wars saga and translated them to our five most iconic adidas Originals sneakers and two key adidas Originals apparel models. Across these models we have paid homage to the distinguished features of airborne crafts and land based vehicles from both sides of the Force and executed them to appeal to both adidas and Star Wars fans alike.

Direct Pack
Darth Vader and the Stormtroopers appear in this pack as well as in the Characters pack. Also, the Women's Game Mid silhouette that appears here is inspired by Princess Leia, featuring gold detailing paired with a modern high-top silhouette with matching apparel.

Tron Legacy London Viral Event

Sometime around July 21 last year US film Bloggers started receiving mysterious packages that included 2 coins. Arcade coins to be exact, with the words "FLYNN’s ARCADE" printed on the one side and "Home of Tron" on the other.

OK! So Flynn's Arcade was the the games arcade that Kevin Flynn owned (played and created games in) in the 1982 film Tron. Turns out that this was the first step in an immersive viral campaign that involved cryptic code puzzles leading to www.flynnlives.com. The site outlined a short bio of Kevin Flynn and a history of the Flynn movement. This can be found here www.flynnlives.com/default.htm The site also had a countdown and further cryptic clues that led to a real world search and ended with the convergence of fans and bloggers at Flynn's Arcade in San Diego.

Once they were inside they were treated to:

- Classic arcade games
- Tron Legacy concept art
- A preview of a Daft Punk song from the Tron Legacy Soundtrack
- A Tron Lightcycle
- T-Shirts and posters to the countdown website

As well as appearances by Garrett Hedlund the actor who plays the son of Flynn and Milo Ventimiglia (Peter Petrelli from Heroes). Pretty damn spectacular!!

The flip side of the coin (Home of Tron) led to http://www.homeoftron.com/ which has some background to Flynn's arcade, Space Paranoid his most popular game and his disappearance.

OK! So this week US Bloggers again started receiving packages with clues tying into the newly revised http://flynnlives.com/ZeroHour website. The top of the website is a cryptic countdown, which has been calculated to end at 8am(PST) Wednesday 24, 2010 which is 4pm over here in London and one day before Disney's Alice in Wonderland World Premiere.

The bottom part of the page started out as a unintelligible code and has slowly evolved into the names of 25 Cities. London being the last on the list and the reason you are reading this.

The list is as follows:
Sydney, Denver, Madrid, Paris, Boston, Washington DC, Orlando, Atlanta, Raleigh, San Diego, New York, Philadelphia, Toronto, Austin, Minneapolis, Nashville, Chicago, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Las Vegas, Phoenix, London.

So something is going to happen in each of these cities at 4pm on Wednesday 24 February. Speculation is that this may be the time and location of:

- A Daft Punk gig
- The opening of a number of Flynn's Arcades
- The release of the first official Tron Legacy Trailer (clips seen so far have been VFX test Footage) in 2D prior to a 3D version at the Alice in Wonderland Premiere the following day.
- Disney Shops will demo Tron arcade games
- The start to a scavenger hunt to a location of a Tron event similar to The Dark Knight viral last year.

It would be great to hear your comments or touch base with a view to possibly banding together if there is a scavenger hunt.

Update 1 - 24 February: theestablishingshot.com received an email this morning confirming that a Tron Legacy event will be taking place today and 25 people are needed.

From: unite@flynnlives.com (Flynn Lives)
Subject: The fight continues...

To all those who passionately believe that Kevin Flynn, digital pioneer and legendary game designer, is still alive... LISTEN UP!

Our last event at Flynn’s Arcade was a call-to-arms for those of us who won't buy into Encom-driven public propaganda about what happened. We're not crazy - there's more to this story than they are letting out.

Today, we have the chance to find out more... to get closer to the truth. WE NEED YOUR HELP!

PREPARE FOR THE NEXT PHASE OF OUR MISSION

We need operatives in 25 different cities around the world on Wednesday, February 24th. Organize now. For more information visit:

FlynnLives.com/ZeroHour

ALSO…

The Flynn Lives website is about to launch private Member Profile pages to better organize our group. If you haven't already, click here to set up your username and password.

Sweeeeet! Looks like there is going to be a Tron based scavenger hunt. I'm hoping that it ends at at a Flynn’s Arcade with a Light cycle. But who knows? Please get in touch/sign up if you would like to band together on this. At a minimum I think we'll be the first to see the first Tron Legacy Trailer. By my (unconfirmed) calculations we should be getting the next clue at 4:00pm today at http://www.flynnlives.com/zerohour/.

OK! So the game was afoot at 4:00pm on the 24th as I calculated. 3 of the 25 cities went active. At 5:01pm it became apparent that 3 cities would be made active per hour. Unsure of when London would be active I based my self near Waterloo - within easy reach of both the IMAX and The Namco games arcade. The London leg of the game started at at 6:00pm. Via the zerohour website we were instructed to head to:

Red 5 in Selfridges, Oxford Street London. Damn! That was a long way for me to trek in a short time. I knew that at least 1 other player @agentlex (an experienced ARG agent) was located half way there at Piccadilly Circus. However he was on foot whilst I was on my trusty steel steed cycle. I bombed it towards Oxford Street careful to abide to all street signs and rules. I stopped halfway through Soho and made a costly mistake.

I tracked down the telephone number for Red 5 via the Selfridges national number found on their website using my iPhone. I asked the Red 5 staff to access the current situation in-store. They said they would have a look around and I should call back. 6:22pm - Once I was in sight of Oxford Street I called them back. Contact had already been made.

The pickup was actually made by @sowasred2012 . I had been beaten , glory and all the good stuff to follow were @sowasred2012's. Once I got back to MI9 I discovered that the winning operatives each received a mobile phone and a number to call. Once they called the number they were directed to a second location where they could find a Tron branded wallet within the wallet they found; 3 vintage Tron cards with codes on them, 2 hardcopies of the newspaper articles from Flynn lives site and two of the much sought after Flynn's Arcade tokens. Pics can be seen here!

Once the codes were entered on the Zerohour website a previously blank square revealed a mini 80s Tron card. Flipping the card revealed that each square was part of a larger Tron image. Once all the codes had been entered and the full image revealed.

More importantly the image was now hotlinked to >www.pitcell.com where it was revealed that an EXCLUSIVE LIMITED EVENT would take place at the IMAX in New York, Los Angeles London, Toronto and Sydney. What we know is that an event is taking place at the London IMAX on Saturday 27 February 1:30pm. Rumours are that it is a short preview of Tron Legacy, the first showing of the trailer maybe a Flynn's arcade re-creation. Tickets are to be available at 9:00pm London time.

The IMAX schedule has not been disrupted and an Avatar screening starts at 2:30pm so any screening would be short and all over within an hour including arriving, collecting 3D Glasses and finding a seat.

What we don't know is what the 66 global operatives are going to be doing, the significance of the arcade tokens or the other cryptic puzzles on the site like the activated flashing gif on the Flynn Lives site, the significance of the numbers on the Tron cards, or even if all the puzzle parts have been identified yet.

Update 2 - 25 February:
All the tickets for all events are now gone and some further developments have taken place.

The animated gif was blinking binary code, if you selected the corresponding numbers on the cards of the Zero Hour puzzle, the cards flipped over to reveal access to another web page - http://www.flynnlives.com/discussionforums/ an apparent forum run by friends, fans or employees of Kevin Flynn.

Searching the forum reveals the following links:

Partially encrypted diagrams of a futuristic lightcycle.
- http://n8xd93f2rk077px1n6wdq839m0.net/

A making of video for the 3D bit and byte models sent out to US Bloggers
- http://www.flynnlives.com/discussionforums/printerVideo.htm

The number of possible clues and puzzles is melting my mind.

Update 3 - 25 February:
Just found out this Encom site was found.
http://encominternational.com/

Update 4 - 26 February:
This webpage was found on the Flynn Lives site.
http://www.flynnlives.com/derez/

Looks like 5 sets of codes are needed. 5 IMAX events, 5 Codes? If you are going to the event s keep a look out for any clues.

Crikey! It's elementary, My Dear Watson!

As part of the second day goody bag from Movie -Con 2 (which included a rare/exclusive George Lucas (in Disguise) action figure now available on eBay). We each received a rather thick card with some odd characters and numbers printed on it. Most guessed that this was a promotional ploy for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes as one could make out the words MR HOLMES on the card.

The card had a slit down the middle and when slot into the card belonging to the guy sitting next to me. Created a a sort of propeller like shape and when spun around the characters on each card were a lot more legible and they read WIDEN YOUR GAZE MR HOLMES. OK! fair enough some really Victorian era style marketing and thought nothing more of it.

However I love a good mystery and excel at puzzles. I couldn't stop thinking about the cards after all this was marketing for Sherlock Holmes master detective. When I got home today I emptied my goody back and dug out the cards again. Naturally I had collected a number of them from other guests at Movie-Con as well as the box on the security guys desk (for my film memorabilia collection).

After having another look I thought the numbers on the cards could mean something 236., 221, 57. and 94. Perhaps a GPS location, map co-ordinate. The periods between the numbers made it obvious, it's an IP address. After some trial & error number swapping. My browser opened up the site at at http://94.236.57.221/ . How exciting!

Nice dark ambient music, a quality background and 5 empty fields awaiting my entry? A small question mark above the fields gave a clue "FIND HER". Find who? Well that much was obvious I am after all a product of many conspiracies that have needed unpicking - and if it's not the Butler you know where to look next. After a quick visit to IMDB I punched in my 5 character guess. And B-I-N-G-O was her name. I was through to the next stage.

UK Blogger Screening of THE WATCHMEN

From http://watchmen-screening.pbwiki.com/

The good news? THIS IS HAPPENING. The bad news? IT'S HAPPENING IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS TIME.

It's going to take place at the Paramount International Screening Room in Building 5, Chiswick Park TOMORROW (that's TUESDAY 3RD MARCH) at 10.30am (nearest station is Gunnersbury Tube, on the District Line).

I realise that's less than ideal timing, not nearly enough notice, and a bit out of the way, but we've got 50 (extremely comfortable) seats to fill, so if you're on the list below (or coming to this cold, and interested in attending) please drop the contacts listed on the original blogger invite page ASAP.
Obviously we'll be treating anyone listed below as priority, after which any extra names we receive will be handled on a first-come-first-served basis.
We'll be starting promptly at 10.30am, so best to arrive in plenty of time to go through security, sign NDAs, etc.
(FYI there's a pretty decent bar-restuarant-type-thing on the ground floor of the building in question, which would be a perfectly good place to grab a drink and have a chat afterwards, circa 1pm.)

Secret Cinema Febuary, London - A vote for Anvil is a vote for the spirit of Rock n Roll

Last weekend Secret Cinema pulled off their most awesome screening yet!:

- Dress for an 80s rock evening (Rock Gods, Shady Promoters, Metal Heads and Old School Rockers)
- Meet at the Sheperds Bush Empire
- An introduction by the legend that is Mr. Ralph Brown or Danny as he is known to his friends
- A screening of a short film about a Lebanese drummer
- An actual performance by up and coming rock band Cauldron
- A UK Premiere screening of ANVIL!

The following is a quote from www.metalhammer.co.uk which sums up the film pretty neatly:

"It’s not as if we metal fans aren’t used to being patronised and misunderstood by outsiders, but the strength of the Anvil movie lies in the fact that it’s a genuinely touching story about human beings, relationships and the pursuit of childhood dreams; all things that the vast majority of people can relate to without recourse to sneering superiority. In fact, the most startling thing about this screening of the film is that as it progresses, there’s a very noticeable change in atmosphere, as bemused giggling slowly evolves into bona fide sympathy and affection for Anvil and their rollercoaster ride."

The film moved me (a non hard metal fan) to purchase the latest ANVIL CD. I say "moved" as I have not bought a hard copy music in about 4 years. I knew of the ANVIL film and although impressed on hearing that ANVIL the band had been making live appearance to support the films launch had already decided that I would see it as a download or when it was on TV. I'm really glad I got to see the film big screen at Secret Cinema. I should mention that I had it the wrong way around - the film was created to promote the story of ANVIl. I only found out at that screening that the film was actually made by a dedicated ANVIL fan who had followed them since their early performances.

In many ways not only is it true to the spirit of rock but independent film making as well. So the film is over. It's time to pack up and leave. WRONG! Secret Cinema was just starting! After the credits the lights dim, a lone guitar riffs metal and a spotlight lights up a second tier balcony revealing "Lips" wailing on his axe.

- The screening was followed by a performance from ANVIL themselves and if that was not enough they pulled in Scott Ian (legendary Anthrax guitarist) to play a couple of songs. ANVIL pretty much got the audience on their feet and rocking out. It was a genuine rock gig by a genuine rock band.

Thanks Secret Cinema and thank you ANVIL for continuing to rock!

An online petition to get ANVIL to play Glastonbury can be found here > http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/sendanviltoglastonbury/

We the people have had enough of rich, bratty rock stars getting all the money and fame. We DEMAND to see ANVIL live on the Glastonbury stage in the summer of 2009. It's not just that they've earned it, it's that ANVIL ROCKS!'

After 35 years of putting in the work for NO REWARD, now is the time for ANVIL!!!

METAL ON METAL FOREVER!!!
