We love Dream Home

Dream Home, Josie HoNetwork Releasing are on a roll! Earlier this year they released the wonderfully subtle and nostalgic Martin Scorsese & Alec Baldwin produced Lymelife. This month they are set to release the rather awesome and wacky Dream Home (19 November).

A little while ago I was lucky enough to see Dream Home. I had heard some good things about it so I wasn’t going in totally blind. My understanding was that it centered on someone’s attempts to acquire a Dream Home under some tough conditions in the Far East.

Dream Home - Cheng Li-sheung (Josie Ho) is a young, upwardly mobile professional finally ready to invest in her first home. But when the deal falls through, she is determined to keep her dream alive - even if it means keeping her would-be neighbors dead. Cut-throat real-estate prices call for bloody countermeasures....

After reading the synopsis and watching the trailer visions of; Three Extremes (Sam gang y), Audition (Ôdishon), The Ring (Ringu), Dark Water (Honogurai mizu no soko kara), The Grudge (Ju-on), One Missed Call (Chakushin ari), Pulse (Kairo) and other great Eastern shockers seeped into my consciousness. So the screening was certainly going to be interesting if nothing else.

Soho Screening room. Lights dim. Projector flares up. For the next 96 minutes the audience veers from white knuckle terror, cringing disgust, to giggles & back again and by the time the credits roll it had completely charmed me. I absolutely loved Dream Home.

The gist of it is that Cheng Li-sheung (Josie Ho) is a hard working young lady; she works in a thankless job in a bank call centre dealing with dismissive clients all day. Unlike her colleagues when the day ends she does not head out to blow off some steam, she heads to her second job as a sales assistant in a clothing store. She has a callow boyfriend, who’s married, not to her - who fits her in around his work, wife and golf schedule. She supports her sickly ungrateful father and at every turn her attempts to buy a home are dashed.

You soon get the picture that young Cheng’s life seems empty and oppressed, something of a modern day Hong Kong Cinderella, desperately needing the help of a fairy godmother.

Dream Home has a similar narrative structure to a Quentin Tarantino film, so the story rolls out in flashback as well as real time - building up to the climax. So we really get to understand more about Cheng’s motivations, her back story and her dream of owning a home - with a harbour view. All the way from her humble childhood through to her butterfly like metamorphosis to the screen's latest slasher queen. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb when I say watching Cheng’s convincing transformation was like witnessing the birth of a new screen character similar to the likes of; Patrick Bateman (American Psycho), Michael Myers (Halloween) and Ghostface (Scream).

Dream Home is not any of those great Easternt horrors I listed above, it’s something different and not going to be easy to pigeon hole. Which is why I’m not surprised that it’s being pitched as a slasher film and the dark satire has been played down. Make no mistake it will horrify and there is a fair amount blood and gore. But it's beautifully shot and you’ll be chuckling - sometimes at the gore.

I saw Dream Home a couple of days after seeing Piranha 3D and couldn’t help but draw
similarities between the two. Both films are filled with gore, both filled with blood,
both have humorous elements except Dream Home is more satire than slapstick, is
relevant, was presumably made for a fraction of the cost, is innovative and actually
entertaining. Even it's poster is a wry take on the American Dream via American
Beauty.

Key to Dream Home is that it has an emotional focus and charm, which comes down largely to Josie Ho’s portrayal of Cheng. I could not help feel sympathetic to her going through the troubles and tribulations as she tries to fulfill her childhood dream and I’m pretty sure she’ll win you over and even though she has a dark side you’ll be silently rooting for her.

It’s easy to see why Hollywood have snapped Josie Ho up and she’ll soon be seen in, not one, but two major productions; Steven Soderbrgh's Contagion starring; Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon and Marion Cotillard as well as in acclaimed director Hany Abu-Assad’s The Courier starring along side Mickey Rourke and Dean Morgan.

Dream Home is deftly handled by Pang Ho-cheung and although it’s efficient, it’s beautifully shot especially the scenes of Hong Kong architecture.

The visuals and editing are slick and innovative (including some class gore FX) throughout but maintain the emotion. I guess the highest compliment regarding the production that I can throw out is that; it’s an Eastern film, with an Eastern cast, shot in Cantonese, gives a really good feel for Hong Kong but translates very easily to a western audience. This may have been helped by the relevant and topical subject matter but Dream Home is one very well made film.

For fairness I should mention that there were a couple of minor errors in the subtitles on the print I saw - although, if anything I felt it added to the charm of Dream Home.

Dream Home will be on a big screen near you this Friday 19 November. And is our pick for this week's releases.

Director: Ho-Cheung Pang
Starring: Josie Ho, Anthony Wong Chau-Sang, Michelle Ye, Eason Chan, Norman Chu

QA Chris Morri & screening of Four Lions

Chris Morris (the master satirist behind The Day Today and Brass Eye) turns his piercing critique to the subject of terrorism with Four Lions, the story of a group of British jihadists who push their abstract dreams of glory to the breaking point. In a storm of razor-sharp, verbal jousting and large-scale set pieces, Four Lions is a comic tour de force. Based on three years of research, surveillance materials from major trials and meetings with everyone from imams to ex-mujahedeen, Morris and his co-writers move beyond seeing these young men as unfathomably alien or evil, and instead portray them as human beings, who, as we all know, are innately ridiculous.

Curzon Cinemas is proud to welcome back master satirist Chris Morris to join them for a post-screening discussion after the screening of his feature film Four Lions at Curzon Soho, Thursday 1st July, 6.30pm.

Killers Premiere & Review

Spencer Aimes (Kutcher) is just your average, undercover, government-hired super-assassin accustomed to a life of exotic European locales, flashy sports cars and even flashier women.

But when he meets Jen Kornfeldt (Heigl), a beautiful, fun-loving computer tech recovering from a bad break-up, he finds true love...and happily trades international intrigue for domestic bliss. Three years later, Spencer and Jen are still enjoying a picture-perfect marriage - that is, until the morning after Spencer's 30th birthday.

That's when Spencer and Jen learn he's the target of a multi-million dollar hit. Even worse, the hired killers have been stalking the happy couple for years, and could be anyone: friends, neighbors, the grocery store clerk, even that crabby old guy shuffling across the street. Now Spencer and Jen are on the run for their lives. As their suburban paradise turns into a paranoid game of dodge-the-bullet, they must find out who wants Spencer dead and why, all the while trying to save their marriage, manage his in-laws, keep up neighborly appearances ... and just plain survive.

European Premiere - Katherine Heigl introduces Killers

I'll start by saying - as yet, I haven't enjoyed a "I'm a spy my wife/husband doesn't know" rom com; True Lies, Mr & Mr Smith, etc. Also I'm probably not the target audience for Killers. So my expectations were pretty low - but I love film, so off I went.

I thought Ashton Kutcher was pretty good in Killers, he continues to build on the credibility garnered with Spread and I hope to see him in a full on action film soon. Killers is an amiable and light film, a pastiche of 50s rom coms & spy films mixed with Mission Impossible 3 and Mr & Mrs Smith with a small nod to Die Hard.

The Premiere audience were laughing the whole way through and there was a good buzz. Cast were all good, particularly the hilarious Rob Riggle. Keep an eye out for the hillarious facial hair gag it had me in stitches. However I thought the ending really let it down though, a different ending may have lifted it to a really good film status.

Chris Rock QA & Screening of Good Hair

Good Hair is a comedy-documentary starring funnyman Chris Rock (EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS) that brings African-American hairstyles to the fore.

When Chris’s daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” the dazed comic committed himself to finding out who had put that question into his little girl's head.

He began searching high and low through black culture to explore the multi-billion-dollar styling industry surrounding African-American hairstyles.

Discussing black celebrities’ personal experiences with their hair and the significant role that hair plays within the black community, GOOD HAIR is both an entertaining and eye-opening documentary that extracts cultural heritage from the most obvious if unlikely of roots.

QA Chris Morris & screening of Four Lions

Written by Peep Show pen team Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong and directed by cult satirist Chris Morris (Brass Eye, Nathan Barley), FOUR LIONS is the latest British political comedy that is as tasteless as it is timely.

Following four Islamic terrorists from the north of England, Morris’s film depicts the transition of a group of young Muslim men from boisterous radicals to would-be suicide bombers.

This being Chris Morris, the jokes are razor-sharp and wryly tongue-in-cheek, as two of the men embark on an ultimately calamitous covert mission to Pakistan to train as bombers, while the other two recruit a fifth member and go about plotting their own martyrdom.

Leslie Nielsen in Conversation at the BFI

The BFI welcome the king of the parody film to the BFI Southbank stage.

He's been referred to as the 'Laurence Olivier of spoofs', with his deadpan delivery and seeming obliviousness to situations rife with slapstick potential.

After a long and rich career in film and TV (taking in Harlow, The Poseidon Adventure and Forbidden Planet), Leslie Nielsen is arguably best known for his later comedy roles, which also include his monumentally inept Lt Frank Drebin in the Naked Gun series. The BFI are very pleased to welcome the king of the parody film to the BFI Southbank stage.

Airplane Jameson Irish Whiskey presents a VIP Screening

Airplane Jameson Irish Whiskey presents a VIP ScreeningThe timing of this event couldn't be better! Together with their friends at Curzon Cinema Jameson will be showing an exclusive VIP screening of the classic film Airplane at the Curzon Soho tomorrow evening, Weds 21st April.

Loved by millions, this satirical take on the disaster movies of the 70s was an instant hit, with legendary performances from Leslie Nielson and the ensemble cast. Not only was the film a bench mark for future films of this genre, but many of the classic moments have been re-enacted in countless other spoof films and TV series. Who can forget the Auto-pilot, the grandma speaking jive, or the timeless “I am serious, and don’t call me Shirley”?

The screening will also be a fitting tribute to Peter Graves, the airplanes captain in the film, who sadly passed away in March this year and will be greatly missed by the film world.

If you would like to get a pair of exclusive free VIP tickets for this screening, along with a free Jameson Irish Whiskey, then please send the names of yourself and your guest to: editor@jamesoncultfilmclub.com

Spaced Flash Mob - Trafalgar Square, London

Earlier today fans of the UK spoof TV "Spaced" converged on Trafalgar Square, London for a flash Mob. Fans re-enacted a slo- mo finger gun battle from episode 5, season 2. The full episode is viewable here

Video courtesy of rjlupin

Hundreds of fans were rallied to action by spreading the following message: "A re-enactment of the famous scene in Spaced. The flash mob will happen on March the 20th) on a weekend and in Zone 1, London. The exact location will be confirmed a week before the event."

If you're out of the loop Spaced is the satirical UK sitcom that spawned Simon Pegg and Nick Frost amongst others. However it is a sitcom like no other. The premise is simple enough: Daisy (Jessica Stevenson) and Tim (Simon Pegg) are out of luck and love, so pretend to be a couple in order to rent a flat together. Downstairs neighbour and eccentric painter Brian suspects someone's fibbing, and almost blows their cover with their lecherous lush of a landlady, Marsha. Fortunately he soon falls for Daisy's health-freak friend Twist, while Daisy herself goes ga-ga for pet dog Colin. Tim remains happily platonic with lifemate Mike; a sweet-at-heart guns 'n' ammo obsessive. The series is chock-full of pop culture references.

In fact, each episode is themed after at least one movie, with nods to The Shining and Close Encounters of the Third Kind proving especially hilarious. Hardly five minutes goes by without a Star Wars reference, and every second of screen time from Bill Bailey as owner of the comic shop where Tim works is comedic gold. The look of the series is its other outstanding element, with slam-zooms, dizzying montages, and inspired lighting effects (often paying homage to the Evil Dead movies). It's an affectionate fantasy on the life of the twenty-something that's uncomfortably close to the truth.

John Landis in Conversation

Legend John Landis is currently in London filming Burke and Hare - a black comedy about a pair of infamous 19th century grave robbers who find a lucrative business providing cadavers for an Edinburgh medical school. Burke and Hare stars; Simon Pegg & Andy Serkis as William Burke & William Hare respectively as well as Isla Fisher, John Cleese, Tom Wilkinson, Stephen Merchant and Jenny Agutter amongst others.

So it makes sense that while he is here that the BFI are delighted to welcome the iconic director John Landis back to their Southbank stage.

Following a sensational surprise appearance at the last year's Halloween BUG music-video special, the BFI are delighted to welcome John Landis back to the BFI Southbank stage. Director of such modern-day classics as The Blues Brothers, Animal House and An American Werewolf In London, Landis has been responsible for some of the most memorable characters in American pop culture.

It is worth noting that the BFI will be screening John Landis' Slasher just before the talk. Slasher was Landis' first foray into documentary, Landis profiles a real American character: used-car salesman Michael Bennett, aka 'Slasher'. A fidgety, chain-smoking fast-talker, Bennett travels the country helping dealerships liquidate their languishing clunkers in weekend blowouts replete with drastically slashed prices and smarmy, in-your-face sales techniques. As Landis follows Bennett through one particularly frenetic sale in Memphis, Slasher becomes both a fascinating character study and a cultural exposé of that most enduring of US archetypes - the used-car huckster.

QA with Josh Appignanesi & The Infidel Preview Screening

When I first heard about David Baddiel's The Infidel (back when they were looking for actors) I was a little hesitant - a British, religious comedy, based around Judaism and Islam? Crikey that sounds dangerous!

After regulary visiting The Infidel website (http://infidelmovie.com/) to catch up on production progress, checking out the numerous humourous behind the scenes clips on the site and viewing the trailer below - I can't wait to see the film. It looks sharp, witty, engaging and absolutely hilarious. Once again a case of not judging a film by it's name. It looks like Revolver have got a hit in the bag.

Bonus! Tonight The London Film School are hosting a special sneak preview of ‘The Infidel’ with director Josh Appignanesi.

THE INFIDEL
A COMEDY OF EPIC ETHNIC PROPORTIONS
Starring Omid Djalili, Richard Schiff and Archie Panjabi
Written by David Baddiel
Directed by Josh Appignanesi

Meet MAHMUD NASIR, loving husband, doting father and something of a “relaxed” Muslim.

Does the “F” word occasionally pass his lips? It’s hardly worth mentioning. Does he say his prayers five times a day? Of course! Well, usually… Does he fast every day of Ramadan? Who’s counting anyway?

He may not be the most observant, but in his heart he is as Muslim as it gets. But after his mother’s death a discovery turns Mahmud’s world upside down. He finds his birth certificate which reveals that not only was he adopted at birth…but he’s Jewish, and his real name is Solly Shimshillewitz!

As Mahmud tumbles headlong into a full scale identity crisis, the only person he can turn to is LENNY, a drunken Jewish cabbie who agrees to give him lessons in Jewishness, which start with how to dance like Topol. Oy vey.

See Edgar Wright's Dead Right here!

In anticipation of Edgar Wright's presentation of Death Wish 3 at the Curzon on Friday 19 February and the Major motion picture release of his Scott Pilgrim vs. the World in August 2010. The Establishing Shot brings you via the magic of the interweb: Edgar Wright's 'Dead Right' in its entirety.

Update: The video is un-embeddable but it can be viewed on Google videos, just click the Dead Right image below.

If you have trouble viewing it. Head over to Google Video to see the clip or buy the Hot Fuzz DVD and look in the DVD extras where it is presented in much better quality.

Edgar Wright produced and directed the aptly named Dead Right during 1993, when he was just 18 years old. Filmed in his hometown Wells (as was Hot Fuzz) it was his first bash in the the Cop genre.

He wrote, direct, shot, recorded the sound and produced the film. All of the characters are played by school friends. Not only does Dead Right parody Dirty Harry but it gets it title for the original title of the first Dirty Harry film "Dead Right".

Paul King + Bunny & The Bull Preview Screening

@sizemore (Mike Sizemore of Slingers fame) has been asked to get a few people together for a FREE screening of BUNNY AND THE BULL this Friday (6th November) around 6.30 in central London. Venue to be confirmed.

All you really need to know is that it’s from the director of THE MIGHTY BOOSH. I haven’t seen it yet myself, but people tell me it’s a lot of fun.

An extraordinary visual feast from the director of THE MIGHTY BOOSH, featuring the crème-de-la- crème of British comedy talent, including Noel Fielding, Julian Barrett and Richard Ayoade, BUNNY AND THE BULL follows Stephen (Ed Hogg), a heartbroken recluse who finds his mind hurtling back to a disastrous treck around Europe he took with his best friend, Bunny (Simon Farnaby), a dissolute gambling addict, as they embark on an extraordinary odyssey where his imagination is the only limit.

Journeying from the industrial wastelands of Silesia to the ball fields of Andalusia, their adventures bring them into contact with Hungarian dog enthusiast (Julian Barratt), a moustachioed matador (Noel Fielding) and a hot-tempered crab waitress (Veronica Echegui) who soon tests how far their friendship really goes.

He has 25 or so seats to fill so drop him an email: mikesizemore@gmail.com

First come first served I’m afraid, but please only get in touch if you’re sure you can make it.

The director, Paul King, will be coming along on Friday to introduce the movie!
