American Friends
Francis Ashby (Michael Palin) a middle-aged Oxford tutor on a hiking trip in Switzerland in 1861. There he meets the American Caroline Hartley (Connie Booth) and her 18-year old ward Elinor (Trini Alvarado). Ashby is drawn to them both, particularly Elinor, but is rather surprised when they arrive in Oxford and rent a house. Women are not allowed in the College, nor are Fellows allowed to marry, which puts him in an embarrassing situation. Ashby's rival for the post of College President, Oliver Syme, takes full advantage of this to try and discredit Ashby. However the situation is finally resolved and Ashby and Elinor are finally married.

The plot was based on a real-life incident involving Palin's great-grandfather, Edward Palin

Rec 2 Trailer & first 5 minutes

Zombie Fest! [Rec] 2 the long awaited sequel to Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza's Spanish zombie smash hit is being released at the end of May

[Rec] 2 picks up where the low budget but incredibly tense and innovative [Rec] left of and follows a medical officer and a SWAT team outfitted with video cameras sent into the sealed off apartment to control the "situation".

It looks like [Rec] 2 has bigger budget and lost the headache inducing low quality (but authentic) camera work.

But wait there's more we dug out the first 5 minutes of [Rec] 2 from our archives. Unfortunatley it's in its original Spanish- but it does give a feeling of what to expect.

If bringing you the new Iron Man Extremis Trailer was not enough. A new website for Stark Industries advertising the Stark Expo 2010 has just gone live over here: http://www.starkexpo2010.com/

We also present not 1 but 2 new Iron Man 2 posters:

It has been pointed out that Mickey Rourke has disappeared from the poster. In fact no villains are featured at all. I wonder if a separate Villains poster is on the way?

Iron Man : Extremis Trailer

With only a month to go till Iron Man 2 smashes the big screen. I watched Jon Favreau's Zathura: A Space Adventure for the first time and was pleasantly surprised at how good it actually is.

I disliked Jumanji and following the sequels always worse than the first film didn't give it a chance. But Favreau really pulls the story story together to make Zathura one of those rare cases where the sequel is actually better than the first film. I'm hoping for a similar scenario with Favreau's Iron Man sequel. The first Iron Man is going to be hard to beat but if anyone can it's Favreau. With that mind I bring you the trailer for Warren Ellis's Iron Man: Extremis. The Motion Comic will be released on April 16 by Marvel Knights. So it'a aimed at a slightly mature audience.

In Iron Man: Extremis - Tony Stark faces his greatest threat ever—a terrorist transformed into an unstoppable force with the powerful bio-engineered Extremis super-soldier serum! Now Tony Stark redefines Iron Man’s mission for the 21st century, setting the Armored Avenger on a new direction that’ll alter his life forever…if he can find a way to defeat a modern day nightmare! At about 1:25 you can see the chest repulsor transmitter from the Mark III suit evolve into the RT of the MARK 21 Extemis suit - a version of which is seen in the most recent Iron Man 2 trailer.

Warren Ellis and Adi Granov adapt the story and the animation was produced by Marvel Knights Animation

Cannes 2010 Poster unveiled

Prior to the announcment the official Selection on April 15th, the Festival de Cannes unveils its 2010 poster. The 63rd edition image is a photograph of Juliette Binoche by Brigitte Lacombe.

(Credit : copyright © Brigitte Lacombe – graphic design Annick Durban)

Continuing the series of heroines as representations of screen mysteries, initiated two years ago, festival organizers were charmed by this allegorical figure of the cinema who gives life to the image with a single stroke of her luminous brush.

The figure illuminates the scene with her presence; the magic of her enigmatic gaze heightened by her austere attire, the grace of her gesture is an invitation to follow.

The festival will be presided over by Jury President Tim Burton. The festival runs from the 12 May with a Gala screening of Ridley Scott's Robin Hood and closes on the 23rd May.

Tron if done by Saul Bass Posters & Titles

More astounding fan art. By now you have seen the Hexagonall Tron titles if they were done by Saul Bass clip. Today we got an email letting us know that Hexagonall had created 8 posters to support the Saul Bass Tron titles clip. Awesome stuff.
Saul Bass was an American graphic designer and Academy Award-winning filmmaker, but he is best known for his design on animated motion picture title sequences.

During his 40-year career he worked for some of Hollywood's greatest filmmakers, including most notably Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese. Amongst his most famous title sequences are the animated paper cut-out of a heroin addict's arm for Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm, the text racing up and down what eventually becomes a high-angle shot of the United Nations building in Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest, and the disjointed text that raced together and was pulled apart for Psycho (1960).

To see bigger versions of the posters head over to Hexagonall's blog here: http://hexagonall.com/blog/

New Iron Man 2 TV Teaser

I'm not obsessing over Iron Man 2 or anything like that :). But over the weekend Paramount released another teaser clip with new bits. Pretty Damn sweet! War Machine rocks! The porto/mobile Iron Man suit looks real good and Black Widow has been undercover in the States so long that she no longer has a Russian accent. What do you think? Scott Pilgrim trailer breakdown

If like me you have not read Scott Pilgrim vs. the World yet and are now unsure of reading the comic or seeing the film first. The dilemma being a bit like Doc Brown's time paradox: if you read the comic first - will the film will be a known quantity and will have to work harder to keep you entertained and interested? Will the film have to live up to the comic? Will you be disappointed if it fails? But if you see the film first will you miss vital insight into the mythology as well as possible in-jokes?

As with Kick-Ass, of which I had only read the first issue of the series. I have decided to see Scott Pilgrim the film first and then read the comic. This will allow me to enjoy the film unencumbered by preconceived expectations. If you disagree do let me know.

With that in mind I found The Gamervision breakdown below really handy; it gives a 101 on Scott Pilgrim, some comparisons between the Comic & the trailer and unfortunatley some possible spoilers.

If you found this interesting you may like my Losers post over here.

Ridley & Tony Scott's new Blade Runner?

This week we have heard two pieces of Blade Runner news that may be related. Let's start with the most recent "flash".

A few weeks ago Henry Jenkins (a Professor of Communication, Journalism, and Cinematic Arts as well as all round Convergence Culture player) sat down with with Steven Lisberger (director of the original Tron) to discuss Tron; its social relevance of, his experience of making Tron and how Tron: Legacy fits.

The discussion is currently made up of 9 clips, with more to come. In the first clip, in reference to people connecting with ground breaking Sci Fi from a certain period - Henry Jenkins says at around 4:22 :
with the Scott Brothers returning to Blade Runner, with a new project right now which is roughly the same vintage.

The full post and interview clips can be seen over here on Henry Jenkins website. It's insightful a well worth a browse.

We suspect that Jenkins is referring to "Purefold" a web series to be developed by Ag8, Ridley and Tony Scott’s RSA Films and Baby Cow Productions. The series was to consist of five- to 10-minute webisodes set shortly before 2019, when Blade Runner took place and aimed initially at the Web moving to television.

Which brings me to the second news flash this week , yesterday we were given the heads up that the Purefold project had been cancelled! You can read the full statement on the Ag8 website here.

We still live in hope of Blade Runner being revisited.

Update #1: 29 March
After a bit of digging we found a video presentation from Ag8 that pitches/explains Purefold, the people involved and touches on how it is related to Blade Runner. Wow! It really was an ambitious project that seems a little ahead of its time. I'm hoping that it's reincarnated at some point.

Starsuckers DVD gets a release date

Starsuckers, the highly controversial documentary about a media obsessed by celebrity will be available for purchase on 12 April.

With Starsuckers Chris Atkins, the director of BAFTA-nominated Taking Liberties takes us on a fascinating journey into the dark underbelly of modern media, uncovering the real reasons for our addiction to fame and blowing the lid on the corporations and individuals who profit from it as well as members of the public that are duped by the media machine.

A covert operation filmed over a 2-year period, the film uses a combination of previously unseen footage, undercover reporting and stunts that fool the public and the media alike as well as animation to reveal the toxic effect that the media is having on all of us including our children. It also argues how truth has become a distant memory in some modern news reporting and presentation, and climaxes with shocking revelations about Live 8.

Starsuckers peels back the onion skin and reveals dirty secrets like:
- How much Simon Cowell pays publicist Max Clifford.
- What the PR guru does to protect one of his influential clients who enjoys sex in public places.
- Would you like to know what Samuel L Jackson, Clint Eastwood, Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes think about celebrity culture and their fans.
- how to make a quick £600 for a fake story that a reporter is too lazy to substantiate.

Previously unseen bonus footage available exclusively on the DVD includes tongue-in-cheek interviews with 50 Cent, Samuel L Jackson, Keira Knightley, Clint Eastwood, Emma Watson, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Chris Noth, Jennifer Tilly, William Moseley, Eddie Izzard and Ralph Fiennes talking and their relationship with fame and their fans.

Atkins's previous film Taking Liberties (also known as Taking Liberties Since 1997) is a documentary film about the erosion of civil liberties in the United Kingdom and increase of surveillance under the government of Tony Blair released in 2007.

Jameson Cult Film Club Screening of Moon

Real film fans will go anywhere for a good film and that includes the Moon (or at least a bastion of British Science dressed up like a space station).

I was one of the lucky film aficionados that managed to go to the Jameson Cult Film Club screening of Moon at The Royal Institution on St Patrick’s day.

[Freeze Frame!] I’d be surprised if you didn’t know - but The Jameson Cult Film Club, is a Cult film Club that seasonally screens cult films in interesting locations and tops the evening off with a "socially lubricated" get together that allows fans to discuss the finer points of the film over a Jameson Cocktail. If that wasn’t enough Jameson are also the sponsor of Empire Magazine’s glamorous ‘Done in Sixty Seconds’ competition.

This year’s Jameson Cult Film Club season has seen screenings of Trainspotting at The Village Underground, An American Werewolf in London, Dracula, Colin & Halloween at The Union Chapel Islington, This Is Spinal Tap at The Clapham Grand and the season ending with a fan chosen and eagerly anticipated screening of Duncan Jones’s Moon at The Royal Institution.

Fans were asked to vote for their choice of film to be screened between cult classics Donnie Darko, H.G. Wells’ classic War of The Worlds or Duncan Jones’s Moon.

Despite assurances that War of the Worlds would be screened in Technicolour Moon topped the poll with 59% and the countdown to launch began.

[Unfreeze!]

I made my way to The Royal Institution, the home of British Science for the last 200 years. The RI’s goal is to connect people with science and my guest & I certainly did embrace the World of Science on the evening. This was actually a double hit for me - as I had planned to visit the RI at some point. So a visit combined with a big screen screening of Moon got the double thumbs up from me.

Jameson Cult Film Club Presents Moon - Crowd outside the Royal Institution of Great BritainJameson Cult Film Club Presents Moon - Moon in the entranceJameson Cult Film Club Presents Moon

The queue for entry was wrapped around the block a testament to the growing popularity of The Jameson Cult Film Club, after a brief wait we made our way into the foyer and were greeted by a number of hosts who checked us in and ensured we had all the necessary bits and pieces all underneath a giant glowing Moon and Michael Faraday statue. The flash of bulbs letting us knows that this was a gala evening.

We made our way around the corner in the spectacularly lit up RI (which accentuated the already space station like feel of the venue) to be greeted by a Popcorn vendor as well as a deteriorating Sam Bell languishing on a space age sofa.

Escorted along space station corridors and up moon beam stairs by silver haired “Moonies” we found the packed Lunar Bar. My choice for the evening was a simple Jameson and Ginger Beer which hit the spot.

Jameson Cult Film Club Presents Moon - Jameson Space & Time BarJameson Cult Film Club Presents Moon - Jameson Space & Time Bar

We took a short walk around the Moon station to discover the chill out pod, which not only was steeped in science history but was the chill out room, the DJ hypnotising the crowd with a space themed playlist. After navigating more space corridors we found the Bay waiting area, leading into the screening room. This room was the highlight of the experience for me, not only was Moon Art Director Hideki Arichi in attendance but he was standing next to; the very suit Sam Bell wore on his lunar walks! Geek out.

Subsequently I have discovered via the Man Made Movies Blog that not only was Arichi there but Actor Benedict Wong (Thompson, one of the two poe faced Lunar Industries executives that run the operation), Visual Effects Supervisor Gavin Rothery and Visual Effects Editor Barrett Heathcote were all in attendance.

In lieu of having any pics of the Moon team from the night. I bring you an envy raising pic of Moon Director Duncan Jones and myself discussing Sam Bell's fate - taken at a preview screening of Moon way back when.

Duncan Jones & I chat about San Bell at a preview screening of Moon

As you probably know Duncan Jones is currently shooting Source Code in Montreal with Jake Gyllenhaal, Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright and Michelle Mona. Source Code is a sci-fi story centered on a soldier who wakes up in the body of a commuter who witnesses a train explosion. Updates on Source Code can be found on http://blog.manmademovies.co.uk or by following Duncan Jones on twitter @manMadeMoon

Silver haired “Moonies” were on hand to dispense space dust and we found the new Sam Bell keeping a watchful eye on the deteriorating Sam whilst tending his plants.
After a quick top up and nearly getting run over by Sam and his remote control Moon buggy we made our way out of Bay 03 for the main show. As we entered the auditorium Sam Bell in full space descended from above, landed and moon walked off, OK so it was more of a slo-mo Moon bounce than a walk.

Jameson Cult Film Club Presents Moon - Sam Bell drops in and moonwalks offJameson Cult Film Club Presents MoonJameson Cult Film Club Presents Moon - Cult Film Club

The short prior to the main feature was the smile inducing “Blake’s Junction 7” starring; Martin Freeman, Johnny Vegas and Mackenzie Crook amongst others.

As you can see by the trailer “Blake’s Junction 7” is part of a hilarious short film trilogy along with “Ant Muzak” and “World of Wrestling”. If you are quick you can see all of them on YouTube now.

At this point we received a long distance transmission from Tess Bell wishing us well on the journey we were about to undertake. Nice touch Jameson and this pips you ahead of all other immersive film experiences.

I have to say watching Moon for the second time allowed me to analyse different aspects of the film as the story unfolds and the scenes where new Sam Bell and old Sam Bell interact are incredibly touching and have replaced the Sci Fi styled visual scenes as the best part of Moon for me. Rockwell really did deserve some kind of *cough* Oscar acknowledgement for his role as Sam Bell.

After the film we headed back to the chill out pod to discuss the weighty issues presented in the film over another cocktail. Finally we sneaked into the space lift and took a self guided tour of the Royal Institution.
