Kiss Me Deadly Screening + Review Competition

The PCC is screening the noir classic Kiss Me Deadly. Based on a Mickey Spillane pulp fiction. This classic was a source of inspiration for Quentin Tarantino. The scenes in Pulp Fiction of the glow of the contents of the never seen briefcase a direct homage to Kiss Me Deadly.

Kiss Me Deadly promises ‘red-blood kisses’ and ‘white-hot thrills’, a noir classic that has lost none of its power to shock and surprise. Private investigator Mike Hammer, a thuggish, macho anti-hero, is drawn into a bottomless pit of conspiracy and corruption after picking up a mysterious and beautiful hitch-hiker. Exposing the black soul of America in the atomic age, this is as hard-boiled as it gets.

SLINGERS

Take a measure of Oceans 11, a dollop of Firefly, a pinch of The A-Team top up with a twizzle of high adventure and you'll get SLINGERS.

Not to be mistaken for the Marvel Comics Super hero team! Slingers actually gets "its name from a group of people thrown together on board an experimental spacecraft that is capable of Slinging itself to any point in space. In theory it’s the only craft capable of getting home. In reality the crew are using it to carry out a series of high tech heists and get even with those who are now exploiting their positions in the post war hierarchy - from the Sleepydog Productions website

Slingers is set in the year 2263 A.D., following mankind’s first interplanetary war. Humanity is now clustered into a finite, but still vast section of the universe known as Enclosed Space. Humanity won the war with an aggressive alien enemy, but at a cost. The way back to Earth is now cut off by an impassable barrier – a side effect of the blast that finally pushed the enemy back.

Slingers is the brainchild of writer Mike Atherton and being produced by London based Sleepydog Productions. A little while back they released the Slingers teaser clip directed by Steve Barron. The clip was made for industry promotion but has subsequently blazed it's way across the Internet.

From what I can make out the clip shows Sean Pertwee (Soldier, Event Horizon, Equilibrium, Dog Soldiers, Mutant Chronicles, Doomsday) as Colonel Hall, who once wronged pursues the crew across the galaxy to retrieve the Slinger ship. Adrian Bower as Dominic ‘DM’ Monroe, a special ops war veteran that is the head of the crew. DM's 2ic is Frank a war buddy played by Tom Mison and he's a little gung ho. Haruka Abe is Marti and possibly the Slingers ship pilot.

Whoa! Scratch that Margo Stilley (9 Songs, How to Lose Friends & Alienate People) is Jeannie the holographic pilot of the ship. Two main 2000AD references I can see in the clip - are the characters Junior the glowing green (Hammerstein'ish) robot and GUN the handheld weapon that has a mind of it's own similar to Gunnar from Rogue Trooper.
Looks like filming is kicking off early this year so a couple of full episodes can be expected soon hopefully.

Iron Man 2 AC/DC Soundtrack and Shoot to Thrill video

AC/DC are doing the soundtrack for Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2. This is excellent news, even though a little Sir Mix-a-Lot would have been awesome.

Even though Black Sabbath own the unforgettable bass thumping Iron Man. However the opening song for Iron man was AC/DC's "Back in Black" played whilst the U.S. Air Force convoy escorting Stark in Afghanistan.

Unfortunately there will be only one new song on the album - the rest of the soundtrack will be made of their greatest hits collection.

'Iron Man 2' he track listing is:
  1. 'Shoot to Thrill'
  2. 'Rock'N'Roll Damnation'
  3. 'Guns for Hire'
  4. 'Cold Hearted Man'
  5. 'Back in Black'
  6. 'Thunderstruck'
  7. 'If You Want Blood (You've Got It)'
  8. 'Evil Walks'
  9. 'T.N.T.'
  10. 'Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be'
  11. 'Have a Drink on Me'
  12. 'The Razor's Edge'
  13. 'Let There Be Rock'
  14. 'War Machine'
  15. 'Highway to Hell'
Track 14 'War Machine' will probably be Don Cheadle/War Machine's anthem.

As a bonus AC/DC have released a new music video for track one - their 1980 song Shoot to Thrill, filled with footage from the movie and a recent concert appearance in Buenos Aires.

The Iron Man 2 soundtrack is out April 19 and the film on May 7 2010. Marvel's Thor is scheduled for a May 6, 2011 release, "The First Avenger: Captain America" July 22, 2011 and "The Avengers" on May 4, 2012.

TONY Special preview + QA with Director and lead actor

Special preview screening of TONY:London Serial killer, with director and lead actor! At Empire, Leicester Square!

A week in the life of Tony, an alienated psychopath with severe social problems, an obsession for action films and a horrible moustache. Unemployed and unemployable, Tony prowls the streets, his nervous attempts to make human connections invariably rebuffed by laughter or contempt. Occasionally he snaps, and violence is the result…

Gerard Johnson’s dark, brutal, bleakly amusing psychological thriller has already drawn favourable comparisons to John McNaughton’s seminal Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and features a star-making lead performance from Peter Ferdinando as the title character - probably the most alarming cinematic anti-hero since Taxi Driver’s Travis Bickle.

Banksy Film Exit Through the Gift Shop debuted at Sundance

Exit Through the Gift Shop a Banksy film has been hinted at on the net for some time - over here > http://www.banksyfilm.com/ . It seems that the film is real and has just been seen for the first time at the Sundance 2010 Festival.

Exit Through the Gift Shop, narrated by “Notting Hill” actor Rhys Ifans, opens with Banksy himself -- or at least a silhouette of him. Photographed in the dark, wearing a hoodie with his voice digitally disguised, the artist says “Gift Shop” is less about him than a guy who tried to make a movie about street art: Thierry Guetta, a French immigrant in Los Angeles who, since his mother’s death, videotapes everything in his life.

One of Guetta’s cousins is Invader, a French guerrilla artist who designs and furtively places mosaics inspired by the video game Space Invaders. Before long, Guetta is recording Invader’s installations, and is sucked into the riotous underground art world -- “It was not just illegal. It was dangerous,” Guetta says -- as it explodes in the early 2000s with the works of Shepard Fairey, Ron English and Borf, among many others.

John Carter of Mars needs you! Warriors wanted to fight 12ft barbarians!

After a couple of false starts Disney's John Carter of Mars is set for a 2012 release and urgently looking for extras.

John Carter of Mars is a a stunning adventure epic set on the wounded planet of Mars, a world inhabited by warrior tribes and exotic desert beings. Based on the first of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “Barsoom Series,” the film chronicles the journey of Civil-War veteran John Carter, who finds himself battling a new and mysterious war amidst a host of strange Martian inhabitants. he film is based on the first serial to feature John Carter, 1912's A Princess of Mars. Carter is an American Civil War veteran who is transported to Mars, here called Barsoom. Formerly an Earthlike world, it became less hospitable to life due to its advanced age: as the oceans evaporated, and the atmosphere thinned, the planet devolved into partial barbarism with the inhabitants hardened and warlike, fighting one another to survive. Barsoomians distribute scarce water supplies via a worldwide system of canals, controlled by quarreling city-states. The Martian atmosphere is maintained by a power plant. Carter rescues a humanoid Martian princess Dejah Thoris from the belligerent four-armed Green Martians, whose respect he gains for his superior strength and fighting ability. He enlists the Green Martians' assistance in winning a civil war, and saves Mars from destruction when its atmosphere plant malfunctions.

It's being directed by Andrew Stanton (who can be found on Twitter here> @6mman) and stars Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins. Willem Dafoe, Thomas Haden Church, Polly Walker, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West and James Purefoy.
Back in the 1940's, animation director Bob Clampett (director of Bugs Bunny and creator of Beany and Cecil) proposed a series of animated theatrical shorts adapting the John Carter of Mars books by Edgar Rice Burroughs (creator of Tarzan). This footage was the test reel for the studios. Apparently one major Hollywood studio was interested in producing these shorts, but changed their mind when they thought the concept might be to weird for some people.

Photography is currently underway in the UK before heading over to the Mojave Desert. This week an urgent casting call went out for muscular extras for scenes to be shot in Surrey.

Casting Collective are looking for:

Men under 45, with muscular gym fit bodies.

Below is a pic tweeted by Jon Favreau (@jon_Favreau). It is a concept model of Woola from his earlier attempt to get John Carter to the screen. Previously he was lined up to direct John Carter.

For an explanation of what Woola is: Below is an excerpt from an early part of Edgar Rice Burroughs' A Princess of Mars

"SOLA: His name is Woola. The men of our tribe use them in hunting and war. He has been told to guard and protect you. He has also been told to prevent your escape. There is no faster creature in our world. And in a fight they can kill very quickly. Do not try to escape, John Carter. Woola will tear you to small pieces.

JOHN CARTER: I continued to watch the creature named Woola. I had already seen how the green Martians treated other animals. They were very cruel.

I thought, perhaps this beast can be taught to be my friend…much like a dog on Earth. I walked close to the creature and began speaking in much the same way I would speak to a dog or other animal on Earth.

I sat down next to him while I talked softly. At first he seemed confused. I believe the creature Woola had never heard a kind word.

For the next several days I gained the trust and friendship of Woola. In a few short days Woola was my friend and fierce protector. He would remain my loyal friend as long as I was on Mars."

A Single Man Preview + QA with Tom Ford

Curzon Cinemas are proud to announce that director Tom Ford will be joining them for a Q&A after the screening of A Single Man.

Fashion guru Tom Ford’s debut feature is a sumptuous mix of 'Mad Men' and 'Far From Heaven'. Set in wealthy 1960s California, the film focuses on George (Firth), a gay college professor who learns that his lover Jim (Goode, 'Brideshead Revisited') has died in a car wreck. Grief overwhelms him and suicide seems the best way out, until a mad night with his lovelorn friend Charley (Moore), and the unexpected attentions of an angora-sweater-clad young man (Nicholas Hoult, 'About A Boy') makes George think twice. Firth deservedly won the Best Actor prize at Venice, and Ford proves that he is a filmmaker of genuine distinction.

World's most expensive ham is being sold by Selfridges this Monday

The world's most expensive ham is being sold by Selfridges on Monday

The leg of Iberico ham, which weighs seven kilos, is on sale at the food hall in Selfridges in London's Oxford Street.

The cost - a juicy £1,800! But comes with it's own with its own DNA certificate of authenticity.

The whole process began with 50 animals being specially selected by pig farmer and ham expert Manuel Maldonado.

The pigs are allowed to roam over fields in Extramadura in western Spain feeding on a diet of acorns and roots that help give the ham its distinctive flavour. After the pigs are slaughtered the ham is salted and cured for three years before going on sale in a hand-made wooden box wrapped in an apron made by one of Spain's most exclusive tailors.

Andy Serkis QA + Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll

Curzon Cinemas are proud to announce that lead actor Andy Serkis will be joining them for a Q&A after the screening of Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll.

The true story of punk icon Ian Dury, who though stricken with polio at a young age, defied expectations by becoming one of the founders of the punk-rock scene in Britain in the 1970s. Dury (brilliantly played by Serkis, King Kong), also fought a long battle with the after effects of fame and Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll pulls no punches in capturing the man with all his complexities and contradictions. Whitecross (co-director of Road to Guantanamo) and writer Paul Viragh have delivered the most impressive look at a particular period and figure in British music history since Anton Corbijn’s Control.

The A-Team trailer

"Ten years ago / In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune . If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire... The A-Team.".

A remake of the popular 80s TV show. A group of Iraq War veterans looks to clear their name with the U.S. military, who suspect the four men of committing a crime for which they were framed.

LSFF Kicks off today!

The London Short Film Festival, the city’s most expansive and radically explosive film festival, returns to the city for its 7th edition. The festival will take place over ten days throughout the capital at ten major London venues in January 2010.

With over 200 short films, LSFF’s programme is exclusively with the work of Britain’s most exciting up-and-coming filmmakers. For ten days the country’s most fiercely independent and creative will see their work grace the screens of the capital’s most prestigious cinemas, from the festival’s home of the ICA to newcomer Shortwave Cinema. With nights of ‘Lo Budget Mayhem’ and ‘Midnight Movies’, the festival sneaks renegades and eccentrics onto the city’s film scene.

This year the festival will reach from the city’s heart, Curzon Soho, to Rich Mix and Vibe Live in the East End and Cinephilia West and the Lexi on the Western Front. South of the river, Roxy Bar and Screen will be hosting LSFF screenings for the first time while we’re pushing back the Northern borders for a special event at the Roundhouse.
