The Black Rat Press: Matthew Small Youngstarrs Exhibition

Black Rat is delighted to announce a solo exhibition by award winning painter Matthew Small. Matts latest body of work Youngstarrs is an exploration on the themes of youth and hope.

Matt Small is an artist whose painting is best understood as an extension of his beliefs and world view. Matt is a passionate believer in social inclusion and that, given the opportunities to be heard and respected, all individuals have something of value to contribute to society. The subject matter of Matts portraits tends to be the marginalized and voiceless in society, those who are socially excluded and often viewed as statistics or pawns in a wider political game as opposed to individuals with the latent potential to contribute and enrich society if only given the opportunity to be heard. By painting portraits of individuals on the outskirts of society. Matt encourages us to spend time with people who we may chose to overlook in our daily lives and in doing so forces us to challenge our prejudices and recognize our shared humanity

Youngstarrs previews on March 26th from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. The exhibition continues until April 17th.

The exhibition has works by artists including Matt Small, D*face, Sweettoof, Brian Adam Douglas, Gaia, Lucas Price, Nick Walker, Blek Le Rat and Slinkachu. Each artist has created something specifically for the show and it is an opportunity to see a wide spectrum of print techniques including etchings, stone lithographs, woodcuts, linocuts and screenprints. As well as a number of new editions being released many of the artists have produced either very small editions of hand coloured prints or unique works.

The Black Rat Press annual print show, London

The Black Rat Press will be holding our first exhibition of 2009 later this month.

The annual print show dedicated to the art of printmaking opens on Saturday 21st February and will include new editions, one off trial proofs, our largest and most complex print to date, hand coloured prints, prints by artists new to the Black Rat Press and live printmaking demonstrations amongst other things we have not thought of yet. 2008 was a great year for publishing with prints published by Black Rat finding their way into both the Tate and V and A collections and we are currently working on projects which we hope will make 2009 prove even better.

Artists involved in the show include Matt Small, D*face, Sweettoof, Brian Adam Douglas, Gaia, Lucas Price, Nick Walker, Blek Le Rat and Slinkachu. Last years show was one of our favourite events of the year (apart from Matt Small being hospitalized) and its a great opportunity to see printmaking in action as well as to ask the printers any questions you might have.

Invitations to the show will be sent out via email in the next few weeks.

Breaking news: Nick Walker's "The Empire’s State" Street Art lottery

from www.graphotism.com
Nick Walker at The London Art Fair

6pm Tuesday 13th Jan 2009 sees the public opening of the “London Art Fair” where Nick Walker will be releasing his screen print "The Empire’s State" through The Black Rat Press (the gallery who represents him). The phone hasn’t stopped ringing with international interest from people trying to reserve a print even from as far as Colombia and Korea. But the 175 prints which are to be on sale at £475.00 each are only being sold to people who are queuing at the London Art Fair. The Black Rat Press have had to draft in extra security in anticipation of the crowds which are expected to start queuing well in advance again, of the doors opening.

In 2008 the demand for Nick Walker's work was so high that in April when the doors opened for his solo show “V for Vandalism” people had been queuing for over 36hrs to buy the print alone, and the show sold out within minutes of the doors opening.

Nick received positive press in 2008. To name a few he a appeared on the cover on the Independent magazine with the title “move over Banksy” in Feb 2008, and has most recently featured in The Observers round up of the year’s biggest events 2008”.

He has had sell out shows in LA and London and an eagerly awaited show coming later in 2009 is rumored to be taking place in New York.

Street Art Awards Party and Charity Auction 2008The first ever Street Art Awards party and charity auction, featuring over 50 international contemporary artists, will be held at Rough Trade East on 4th December.

Urban art business, Auction Saboteur, has organised the awards that will celebrate the best urban and street art offerings from 2008. All money raised will go to the Single Homeless Charity.

The Awards Ceremony

The night will see Rough Trade East turned into an urban art bazaar with attractions including: charity art tombola, pin the devil tail on the banker, hook-a-duck-outa-an-oil-slick, a magician, DJ’s and lots of art related prizes.

Each attendee will be given a ballot paper on entry and asked to vote for their favourite artist from the shortlist. The winners will receive a specially designed sculpture that will also be up for grabs on the night.

The charity art tombola will give people the chance to win anything from a special, one off, custom piece of art, on either a reclaimed record cover or vinyl record, to a jar of jam or bar of soap.

Tombola tickets will be £5 each – a bargain if you win a Matt Small original (his work usually sells in the region of £5K - £6K). If you win the soap at least you’ve contributed to a good cause – your conscience will be clean.

Banksy Smiley Copper, The Hospital, London

A face to face show of classic drawings and paintings by Andy Warhol set against the infamous graffiti work of Banksy.

The Hospital Gallery is delighted to present Warhol Vs Banksy; the first exhibition anywhere by the world’s two hottest artists today. Campbell’s or Tesco? Grace Kelly, Muhammad Ali, Winston Churchill, Mick Jagger, Queen Elizabeth, The Beatles, Smiley Man police statue, Andy Warhol himself and others make for a potent cocktail of celebrity, satire and voyeurism. Upon contact opposing pictures are explosive for their contrast, even of the same subject.

Pollock Fine Art in association with The Hospital present the first exhibition anywhere, of over 40 mixed media works by Banksy and Andy Warhol.

Banksy is a well-known pseudo-anonymous British graffiti artist. He is believed to be a native of Yate, South Gloucestershire, near Bristol and to have been born in 1974,but there is substantial public uncertainty about his identity and personal and biographical details. According to Tristan Manco, Banksy "was born in 1974 and raised in Bristol, England. The son of a photocopier engineer, he trained as a butcher but became involved in graffiti during the great Bristol aerosol boom of the late 1980s." His artworks are often-satirical pieces of art on topics such as politics, culture, and ethics. His street art, which combines graffiti writing with a distinctive stencilling technique, is similar to Blek le Rat, who began to work with stencils in 1981 in Paris and members of the anarcho-punk band Crass who maintained a graffiti stencil campaign on the London Tube System in the late 1970s and early 1980s. His art has appeared in cities around the world.Banksy's work was born out of the Bristol underground scene which involved collaborations between artists and musicians.

Banksy does not sell photos of street graffiti or mount exhibitions of screenprints in commercial galleries. Art auctioneers have been known to attempt to sell his street art on location and leave the problem of its removal in the hands of the winning bidder.
