The Crypt, Holborn Circus, London

The Crypt, Holborn Circus, London

The sense of history lies heavy in the Crypt of St. Etheldreda's. Its foundations date back to the 6th Century; its rough stone walls, eight foot thick in parts, and its heavy blackened beams to the 12th Century when Ely Palace was constructed above The Crypt by the Bishops of Ely in Cambridgeshire as their London bishopric.

In 1531 Henry VIII and his first wife Catherine of Aragon hosted a Grand Celebration in The Crypt which lasted for five full days and nights. They feasted on swans, stuffed with larks stuffed with sparrows.

New Street Square buildings, Clerkenwell, London

Just off Fetter Lane, Land Securities has built a cluster of dynamic buildings that are bringing new life to the whole area.

Recreating traditional ground-level routes – including a delightful public square – the development offers around a million square feet (gross) of office space and plenty of much-needed retail. The new shops, restaurants and bars of New Street Square promise to revitalise this Midtown district.

It will also be a green development – in every way. As well as grass roofs and a 'green wall' of growing plants, New Street Square aims to beat current regulatory energy targets by 15%.

The Royal Courts of Justice at night, High Holborn, London

The Royal Courts of Justice at night, High Holborn, London

The grand and elaborate Gothic architecture of this esteemed building seems apt for the centrepiece of the British Legal system. Built by the architect G E Street in 1882, it is said to be his finest achievement.

It is here, just off the Strand, the High Court presides over the most serious civil trials in the country including divorce, libel and civil liability. Criminal cases are handled by the Old Bailey.

The interior is a magnificent labyrinth of 35 long corridors and 1000 rooms, of which 88 are court rooms. On the first floor there is a small costume exhibition displaying the stately legal outfits worn throughout history.

A guided tour is run twice on a monthly basis, otherwise visitors are invited to explore the building and watch lawyers adorned in robes and wigs battle it out in court.

Do be aware that judges will not suffer interruption when they are passing judgement or witnesses are taking oaths.

Smithfields meat market at night, Smithfields, London

Smithfields meat market at night, Smithfields, London

Smithfield market is one of London's oldest markets, where meat has been bought and sold for over 800 years. A livestock market occupied the site as early as the 10th century.

In 1860 the Corporation of London obtained an act of parliament to construct new buildings on the Smithfield site, with work starting in 1866.

Designed by City Architect Sir Horace Jones, the buildings were completed in November 1868 at a cost of 993,816.

The two main sections of of the market, the East and West Buildings, were built above railway lines which enabled meat to be delivered directly to the market.

A Poultry Market opened in 1875, although this building was subsequently destroyed by a major fire in 1958, being replaced by a rather inappropriate building in 1962.

The General Market was added in 1883 with the Annexe Market following in 1888.

Recent modernisation has seen 44 hygenic, temperature controlled stalls replacing the original 162 stalls inside the East and West Buildings, with some parts of the building being used as office space.

Fun Lovin' Criminals to play a silent disco gig in the High Court

The Fun Lovin' Criminals will play a 'silent disco' in the High Court in London, the first rock concert ever played at the venue.

The band will host the one-off event, where revellers listen to music through wireless earphones, at the Royal Courts of Justice on September 10.

Nick Mills, of Smirnoff Original Nights, which is organising the event, said: "Silent Disco is one of the most original nightlife concepts of recent years

"In terms of soundproofing the live event with the Fun Lovin' Criminals, the drummer will be in a totally soundproof box.

"As with other Silent Disco events the sound is amplified 100% through the headphones and not speakers, meaning guitars and vocals won't be audible to the crowd.

"It also means that the sound quality is actually better than that of a normal gig as noise pollution is taken out of the equation and everyone has the same sonic experience."

The original Ghost Busters Ecto 1 car is for sale!

1959 Cadillac Cadillac M&M
Cadillac : Cadillac

From the eBay listing:

Title: Universal Studios Ghostbusters Ecto-1
1959 Cadillac MM
Current bid: US $45,000.00
History: 9 bids

In August of 2006 I purchased the original Universal Studios Ecto-1. The car was stripped of all the Ghost busting equipment and sold as an ambulance and with a little negotiation I was able to get all of the roof rack parts and the original light bars. This car was used at the park for over fifteen years for the Ghostbusters Experience, parades and display inside the Florida park. This car is one of three Sony/MGM authorized Ghostbusters 1959 Cadillac Miller Meteor Ecto-1. There are the two original cars used in the films and this one built exclusively for the Universal Studios Theme parks. This car has a rich history and thousands of fans have been photographed with this car. The only major change made to this car was the roof rack. We modified the roof rack to resemble the screen used Sony Ecto-1 original car. Other upgrades are cosmetic and mechanically it's very sound.

Included with the car are a brand new set of Code 3 blue lense covers and center Chrome strips for the light bars. We have all of the roof rack components from the Universal Studios roof rack. A new set of Coker 4" whitewall tires are included with the sale. We also have other detail parts, hoses and information that will only make the car more accurate. I'm including an cdr packed with hundreds of photos of this car and the original Sony Ecto-1 for reference.

Mechanically the car runs great and is powered by a Chevy 350 with a turbo 400 transmission. This is a big heavy car and while it won't win any races, it's fine for around town cruising and driving. Has upgraded master cylinder, brand new brakes and brake lines and will stop on a dime! For insurance reasons most of the glass was removed from the car and replaced with acrylic windows. This does not detract from the car at all and can be easily changed by a qualified glass company. The front windshield has some scratching on the drivers side and a small crack on the passenger side. 1959-1960 glass will work and included with the sale is a brand new windshield rubber seal...

We have done several charity shows and one convention with Ernie Hudson from the original Ghostbusters films. Ernie was nice enough to sign the car on the headliner above the sun visor. Ernie commented that the Universal car looked a lot nicer than the original in the films.

/>

The car has a clear Tennessee title and currently tagged in our county.

Included are the Original Bill of sale from Universal Studios, Copy of the original Title and any information we had pertaining to the original purchase of the car. We also have a website dedicated to the history and restoration of the thee authorized Sony cars.

Somerset House Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court, London

Somerset House Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court

The Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court is at the heart of Somerset House - a dignified courtyard with a mischievous streak.

The array of jets dance in an orchestrated sequence, with added coloured lighting at night - a refreshing surprise on a warm spring day.

The fountains run from 10.00 to 23.00 daily.

Please note: the fountains will be switched off from Sunday 28 September 2008, while the courtyard plays host to Origin: The London Craft Fair and the Ice Rink. They will return to their normal programme in Spring 2009.

Goldeneye location: The ‘St Petersburg’ square: Somerset House, The Strand (before its renovation), London

Somerset House as a film location

The 'St Petersburg' square, where Wade uses a sledgehammer to fix his motor, is the courtyard of the recently restored Somerset House on the Strand – which later became the ‘Ministry of Defence’ in Tomorrow Never Dies. This popular filming location can also be seen in Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow (as turn-of-the-century Manhattan), Billy Wilder’s superb The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (as the ‘Diogenes Club’ where Holmes meets his older brother Mycroft (Christopher Lee) and in Shanghai Knights (where Jackie Chan invents the kung fu movie at the end of the film).
